Help with propane burner

We bought a new propane burner for our hot water tank in our prowler and we are having troubles....it was the right size but when we light it the flame is WAY to high (to the point where it leaves black marks on the side of the trailer). Can someone please help and tell us what to do to fix it?

You should be getting a blue flame, if not then the air mixture is not correct. Depending on which hot water heater there is a set of slots on a tube fitting over the burner and that adjusts the amount of air by moving it back and forth. Look at the manual for your furnace (down loadable if you do not have it).

You need to adjust the air shutter at the burner inlet to get a nice blue flame with no smoke. Better to let someone that knows what he is doing to make the adjustment.
