Hitch Question

the hitch on my truck seems to move more than I would think it should. Should the hitch have some play or should it be tight. I am talking about where the hitch goes into the back of truck.

My Grand Cherokee had a little play. My F350 was tight. I think it's normal tolerance. Unless you're truck is a 2.5" receiver and your hitch is 2".

If all of the openings for the hitch were made to be tight, many of them would be completely unusable by many users.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't kinda thing.

I have about 7k towing miles on my new truck and have noticed the receiver hole enlarging and appearing looser than it was new. I paid close attention to this when I first got the truck based on previous history with my 06 Ram.

I have noticed my receiver hole elongating. The elongation spans diagonally from upper front to lower rear. I even noticed a raised lip on the drivers side of the receiver. The raised lip portion of the pin hole starts about at 2 oclock and ends around 8 oclock (ie, the bottom part of the diagonal elongation)

This appears to me that there is pressure on the receiver that goes down and to the rear. I assume this is from the WDH. I have had this exact wear on two trucks now.

I have read on forums that this is due to misadjustment of the trailer brake power although, I can't imagine too much or too little brake power could cause this.wear.

Looking for any experiences from the forum on this.

I have replaced the receiver on our Excursion due to too much distortion on the top of the opening. When I started seeing the extra slop in the drawbar, I had a weld bead put on the top of the drawbar to reduce the slop. That added to the distortion, and made me decide to replace the receiver.

Well after 2 yrs with a new receiver and a 13 yr old drawbar (!!!), some slop is returning. What I have done to tighten up the fit is to use a shim inside the receiver. I am using a length of strapping (for home and deck construction) about 1-3/4" wide and aboot .040" thick. I started using it on the top of the drawbar, but have switched to sliding it into the the bottom of the receiver. Works great, and doesn't jam up. Maybe over time the distortion will continue, but we'll wait and see!!!
