I use my trailer as a guest house and extra room, sometimes as an emergency bathroom if the ones in the house are full. We usually camp at least once a month, and it rarely gets all that hot here. The toilet gets flushed a couple of times a week anyway, so the tank retains plenty of moisture. I haven't had any problems, smell or otherwise. The sensors even still work- I just dump the tank and then add about 5 gallons of clean water before traveling.

I flush both tanks with the flush king after every trip, then I also back fill some water from the dump station into the black tank and throw some treatment in there for the next trip.

This is a old post But, I haven't had time to reply because it's summer and I have been out camping. I also am a weekend camper. In my TT I was happy to discover that my bathroom sink dumps into my black tank. I always makes sure to dump all my extra water down the bathroom sink. For example, if I cook up sweet corn or anything else that requires boiling I let the water cool and dump it down the bathroom sink and therefore into the black tank. I even carry water I may use outside for cooking or cleaning into the TT and then dump it down the bathroom sink. By doing this I've never had a problem with too little water in the black tank. I dump every weekend and after pulling the valve I dump a about 4 gallons of water out of a bucket into the bathroom sink quickly. The sink dumps into the high side of the black tank and this works as a flush. Works good. Check out where your bathroom sink dumps. On many campers it dumps into the black tank.

Hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor) is created when waste is digested. The options are to kill the bacteria that digest the waste (formaldehyde), sufficiently mask the odors with fragrance and surfactants, or dump the water and clean your tanks. #1 is a no-no, #2 is what most of us do, #3 is my preferred choice.

Maybe you can help me I went to az last month the black tank almost full, every time I turned the smell was terrible but going straight no odor. I checked for leaks in the tank compartment and the bathroom and no leaks but when i turn i had smell again. Now it was 115 degrees in az do you think i over cooked the tank (sounds Gross) is there a dedicated vent through roof I since drained it and i always flush the tank when i drain. I was thinking of filling the tank from the roof so i can check it for leaks. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Tony

Not sure creating a water leak in your rig would be a good way to find a vent leak Reading the previous posts about the Studer valve would be a good place to start. A 2003 I had the 'under the sink valve thingy' was a very thin rubber flap, and it had dried out from age. New valve, no more problems.

Very interesting situation when turning? Mine starts to get bad when it reaches 3/4 full the rest of the time it is fne. I know it is time to dump when it starts to smell again. I think it is that the vent is no longer above the level of liquid? Don't really know. Maybe someone out hear has the answer. I have been stationary now for a year and dumping every two weeks has been my normal routine.

When possible, we try camping quite often, sometimes every other weekend or maybe once a month?? Just, whenever we can...But I am a bit OCD when it comes to my tanks since I've read so many horror stories about them...During a 3-4 day camping trip, my Gray and Black tanks get full quite often, so I find myself emptying them every so often, though not completely.
I try to empty them down only to about 1/4 to 1/2 tank, just so there's still water in them...Then, at the end of the trip, I completely empty both of them and rinse the black tank REAL good...I don't want to take a chance of clogging up the sensors or having any other "preventable" issues...I try playing it safe, especially when the water is free...

I thought there was only a studer valve under the two sinks not on the black tank

The only reason i wanted to fill it from the vent is because thats how we find leaks in plumbing and i cant get enough water in it from the toilet. Do you think one of those solar fan vent caps might do
Thanks tony

Water and RV's is a bad combination, the 'wood' soaks up water better than a sponge and won't let go of it.
I fill my black tank with a wand stuck down the toilet pipe. Just be careful not to jostle the flush valve, if it leaks the water out of the bowl, it can leak the smell back out.
I can't say about the solar vent cap, never used one.

True, unless the lavatory sink drains into the black tank.

im going to replace both studer valves to be safe like Jesilvas mentioned, I also have a tank flush (never used it) but that should do the same thing? as the wand down the toilet keep filling until I see the level almost full. My buddy told me yesterday to put ice down the toilet then drive this will slosh around and clean the sensor's is this true? make sence
