How to measure length of a TT

My son and his wife just bought a new 31 ft TT. I was wondering how do they figure the length of it, bumper to bumper, usable space inside? Curious.

What are you using the figure for? If you are figuring inside square footage, measure inside. If you want total length, measure very front to very back.

If you mean the manufacturer's listed length, there really is no rule. If you check the specs sheet it will usually list the actual length but the number for the model in the sales literature often has little to do with actual length. If you mean the highway department, should they happen to measure it for some reason, they would measure from the point of the tongue to the farther most rear point, usually the bumper of spare tire.

Our travel trailer, manufacturer listed as 19' measures from the point of the hitch to the back of the spare tire, 23' 5".

The model numbers on the TT or 5ers for that matter don't necessarily match up with how long the trailer is. My Jayco Eagle 338 is 39' long with the actual camper part being 36'10". You will also find that most salespeople at RV dealerships don't get this either. They will call a Cardinal 3450 a 34' model when it actually is over 40' long.

I have noticed some sales people hinting the model #'s are how long a tt is. Wrong !!!! A 256 DRSS might actually be a RV measuring 29'. Mine is a a 232ES, but measures 26' 4" (ball to bumper). my old tt was a #236 and measured 24' 6".

The reason I heard was when the campground asks what size is the trailer( mine says 27rkss) I say 29'. It is really 33'6".Something to do with camp grounds. But hell I'm not sure either.

My parents ordered a 1958 KenCraft TT, listed length was 18'-2". The only way to get that length was from the extreme front of the tongue to the tail lights!
The model number really don't mean much. Our DSDP is a 4090 model, but it measures 40'-11".

I agree with Highway... However, don't get fooled by a Toy Hauler. They are often considered a utility type trailer and the manufacture listed length is the box only. My Thor Toy Hauler was listed as 25 ft. That was the box. Total length was 28.5 ft. I always answered 30 ft. if asked at a campground.

Whatever model trailer you have, always give total length measurements to campground personnel and not a box/living space length.

This way the campground will know precisely where they can put you, as most campgrounds also need to accommodate the TV either, in front of, or beside the trailer, to keep the TV off the travel roads to let other campers come through as the campground fills up.

Model #'s of trailers never seem to match up with lengths. I have a somewhat restored 1984 Fleetwood Prowler 19E. It would suggest 19' living space. Nope. Box is 16' and total length is right at 21'.
