Just another retired older couple
Hello everyone, I am checking in to this forum in hopes of gaining some current RV knowledge as we haven't camped in a few years due to an auto accident. We are too old to tent anymore and too under powered to tow a trailer of size anymore so looking to downsize to maybe a Cricket.

Welcome 500Spot.
Lots of good advice on the forum along with some annecdotal advice. Fire away with the questions and lots will respond.
Will you be part timing or full timing?

We drive a Fiat500L Trekking with a six speed manual. It has a small 180HP turbo engine so our choices are few. We want to get something with hard sides rather than a tent trailer again. A teardrop is out of the question, don't want to go outside to cook or lay down to dress. It needs enough room for my wife and I & our two dogs. I'm 6ft tall so the TaBs are out of the question, can't live my life with my head bent down. We just go camping occasionaly and travel on spur of the moment outings. We won't be trading the car up in size so we can pull a larger trailer. We love our car, it does everything we need it to do like getting fantastic gas mileage. So far our favorite place to go is the Pacific Northwest. We also like kayaking.

Welcome to the forum!
According to the manual for a 2015 owner's manual, Fiat does not recommend towing a trailer. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think you will need a different vehicle for even towing a smaller trailer. You really need to find out if towing even a small trailer is possible and/or will it void your warranty.
You may want to really look at what kind of trailer or RV would meet your needs and then see how or what you need to do to have a vehicle that can safely tow it. That will probably mean either trading in the Fiat for a car or smaller SUV that can tow a smaller trailer or buying a second vehicle that can serve as your tow vehicle. So, take your time and figure out what will really work for you.
We take longer trips that mean living in the trailer for 4-8 weeks. So for us, our 26'9" Minnie was about as small a trailer as we wanted, but big enough for longer trips. And, we wanted something that could be towed with a 1/2 ton truck. There are lots of used 1/2 ton trucks that can be purchased at competitive prices, and lots of smaller trailers that can be towed by them.
If you purchase a vehicle only rated for 3,500 lbs. or so, your choices will be more limited, but you can tow something such as a Cricket or other very small and lightweight trailer. Just be careful to pay attention to payload capacity and CWVR.
Take your time, have fun, and I hope you're able to get back on the road traveling and camping.
