What is an accumulator tank and what is the advantage of installing one ? ...another Newbie

It's the same thing as a house with a well pump. You have a pressure tank that fills up with water from the pump. When you use water, the pump stays off until the pressure tank starts running out. It keeps the pump from cycling on and off every time you open a faucet or flush the toilet- like on a camper.

It is a small tank installed between the pump and faucets--it will keep about a gallon or two of water under pressure all the time, which minimizes the number of times the pump has to come on for small amounts of water use. There is a rubber membrane inside that expands as water fills the tank--this is how the pressure is held. When the volume in the tank gets low enough, the pump kicks in to re-pressurize.
Sometimes it helps on noise and vibration also--I had one once and found no benefit to it, but others have said they work well.

My main interest in the accumulator tank is so we can shut off the water pump at night and still flush the toilet and make no noise. This will keep the kids and the wife sleeping longer and that will end up keeping everyone happier.

Findings: I took the pump apart and found nothing out of the ordinary. Re-installed the pump with the output hose blocked off. This way I can isolate the whole water system. I pressurized the pump and it still cycled every 1-3 minutes for a split second. This confirms the pump is bad. No use trying to fix it since it's 11 years old. Why waste $100+ for a new pump?
BTW, my 19 year old Shurflo 2088 pump is has been good enough for me for 14 years, (116k miles).
