Leveling preferences?

I am reading a lot of bad reviews about the yellow plastic interlocking leveling blocks. That they get gravel stuck in them and also crushed by the camper weight.

What do you think?

I was thinking about trying some orange Lynx levelers and getting hosspads? I would like to buy something we could use over and over and not have to replace each year. Hosspads are kind of expensive and look heavy. But a few reviews say that if we buy these, the leveling blocks will last a lot longer?

Right now we have 4 pieces of wood. We put one under each jack and crank it down to the right level. I have heard that if we dont crank it down as far, the camper is more stable? Also we are concerned about adding too much weight to the camper.

We have a 30ft, tandem axle trailer that weighs about 5,500 lbs dry.

Thanks for your help!

If you use the cheap levelling blocks they are junk.

I have been using the Lynx levelling blocks for three years now with no issues what so ever.

Even had my trailer sitting on one over winter storage and still looks like new.

Yes they get some rocks in them but in my case I just hit them together and the rocks fall out.

I did the same with wood and now with the Lynx levellers that will stay my choice.

I have two bags of Lynx. I've broke a couple over the last 3 seasons. Yes they do get gravel stuck in them. So do wood blocks. JMO but I don't think they're very good in softer gravel. They tend to sink a bit. I would carry two 2x6x16" wood blocks for gravel. You can stack a Lynx on the wood if needed.
Lynx are great on solid surfaces. I don't use them for my front landing gear either or for that matter the rear jacks. I have 4 4x6x16" blocks for those.

You should be levelling side-to-side with boards or plastic pads UNDER THE TIRES on the low side, Level front-to-back with the tongue jack. The STABILIZER jacks should only be cranked down enough to stabilize (keep the trailer from bouncing). If you use the stabilizer jacks to level, you will bend or break something. Plastic or wood your choice, I prefer pressure treated wood scraps, cheap, durable, not too heavy.

Sorry if I misread your post.....

leveling or stablizing

Your post is confusing. Are you leveling or stabilizing? You use your jacks for stability not leveling. I use the big red Anderson leveling blocks and they work great. Remember that are for side to side and your tongue jack is front to rear. Fon't bring the jacks down to far and they will stabilize much better. Hope this helps.

Love the info off this forum!

JimBob - Thank you!!!!

I had no idea. We are brand new at travel trailers. The owners manual is completely useless and my only way of getting information is off this forum. Thank you so much for clarifying this. We were not doing it the correct way - we have only taken the trailer out once, hopefully we didnt screw anything up.

I use my Lynx levels constantly. They're great when there's a moderate difference from side-to-side, and when the lot is fairly level front to back. They only got under the tires.

I've got 2x6 pieces cut cut about 12" long to go under the stabilizer jack pads so that they don't sink in soft ground. I also carry 2 sets of 2x10s cut 54, 58, and 62" long, stacked, so that I can raise the tires up if I can't get the tongue low enough to level the camper (my camper sits lower than average). They're screwed with one screw between each board to keep them from moving while backing up.

I use Lynx blocks under the tires have occasionally used 2x4 pieces under the jacks to spread the slight pressure of the stabilizers in soft or wet dirt. and yeah... level at the tires and tongue jack. Stabilizers are just put down far enough to make solid connection tot he ground and that's it. Don't lift with them. If you did it just once on fairly level groups I am sure you really did not mess much up if anything.

I have used 2x6's, 2x8's etc for levelling until I got a set of Andersen levellers. I use the plastic pads for the stabilizers jacks and they work fine. Added a set of bal x chocks ( I think that's the name) to reduce motion and we have been happy with those too. I watch what others are using and if I see something that looks useful I talk to the owners. Most are very willing to offer pros and cons.

Forgot to mention how easy it is to level the rig. My wife or kids determine how many blocks are needed, get them out and arrange them and tell me over the FRS radio to move forward or back. I can also level solo using my Swift Hitch SH01 Portable Wireless Camera System https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ZEON90..._PUxixb5FN6XXX

+2 Andersen is the way to go! I still have my Lynx blocks as a back up just in case but the Andersen's are great!

I still carry my Lynx blocks, too, for backup, but primarily now use them under the electric tongue jack.
