MPG ?
We are relatively new to the lifestyle, but have quickly fallen in love and consequently considering our next purchase. Current travel trailer is pushing 8500 pounds loaded and I average 9 mpg, 5th wheel we like hits 11500 loaded. Question is does the additional 3000 pounds make a huge difference in mpg?

5th wheel has way more wind resistance due to it's height.

If you are currently getting 9 mpg, that is close to being a miracle.

Not worried, curious as to what others have experienced.

Just finished DFW to Cape Cod. 8.9 on way up, and 9.2 on way back.

I would think it will feel it more. 3,000 will make a big difference imo. Aren't you almost at your max for that truck?

I know it's not necessarily comparable but...
I have a Jeep with a 5.7 Hemi, lots of power. Not pulling I get 15-19 mpg on the highway if I get it to go into OD and not heavy on the pedal, ~11 in the city.
Last year I had to pull a ~7K trailer and my mileage dropped to ~9, not bad consider the my weight.
So I doubt the additional weight will make that much difference.

Echo Sandman, mileage not a consideration of ours. I get 10-11 and am happy as can be. If I got 7-9, I'd be happy as can be. We're camping for goodness sake, and 200-250 miles at a pop is all this senior bladder wants to go between stops for snacks and fuel anyway. Heading west from RH and the mileage is less, heading east toward the beach the mileage is better. Terrain makes a difference. Never exceed 65, usually right at 60mph, my choice, truck would like to roll at 70 but not the driver.

You might look at the owners manual and find the max frontal area allowed for a trailer. A big 5er has way more wind resistance and that will tax the truck much more than the 3000 pound increase in weight. Between the 2 you will be watching the temp guages and praying alot.
