Negotiating for a new Travel Trailer

What percentage off manufacturer recommended price is a normal good price when negotiating for a new travel trailer?

From what I'm seeing a good price would be 30%. An less then good would be 25%.

What have you found?

Thanks

Somewhat this would depend on the price range you are working with--not hard to get 30% off most fivers. Larger the price tag, should be easier to hit the larger discount. I haven't kept track of TTs, tho, so may be different in that end of market.
Down here, Motorhome Specialists has billboards all over advertising 25% off EVERY MH in stock...
Be wary of inflated MSRPs and large discounts...

Personally, I just googled the model, looked at all the RV dealers that sold it, what they sold with it, what they were asking for it, and got a comfort zone of what I would be willing to pay.

For instance, my TT varies from 10k to 20k, with most in the 12-16k price range. So, if I found some in the $13k and under range, I would have started looking more closely at those dealers.

(My model happened to not come with a TV or radio from the manufacturer, but some dealers were including a TV in that price range, so those little add ons might account for a fluctuation in price.)

Then, I look for service after the sale. That is the clincher for me on seller.

I was a repeat buyer, so I already knew the integrity of the dealer. When he quoted a price, it was consistent with my comfort zone. I accepted on the spot. Could I have saved a bit by going elsewhere? Possible, but not worth it to find out. In fact, I think I got a great deal.

Go in with cash...offer really a low price and have them come back to you with an offer.

If they get you in the "office" to "review financing options" with the "sales manager", you will NEVER get the best deal.

Remember, these places are finance companies disguised as RV dealerships.

It will be very easy to get 25% off. With a little work 30% off and on a left over unit maybe 35% off or more.

All i know that shopping for our new 2015 Grey Wolf 26RL was worse than any vehicle i have ever bought. Our trailer listed for 31,000, and we saw it at our local Camping World in Jacksonville FL, the lowest they would go was 23,000, so off to the internet. Another Camping World in Columbia SC listed about the same unit at a no hassel price of 19,700, went back to Jacksonville and the refused to match the price ( although they told us they would never loose a deal over price ) So a 4 hrs drive to SC and we have our new TT, and NO hassell, 19,700 out to door.

So if you are willing to travel a little !!!

Jim & Pat

PS- We have made a half dozen or more trips and love it !!! Of to a week at the lake at the Petersburg COE park next week !!!!

Thanks - considering how much a TT depreciates in the first year it is very important to get a good new purchase price.

I went to the Pomona RV show. The dealers were marking 50K (MSRP) TT's down to about 40K. With cash and talk I would guess 30% would be a good figure.

The one good thing about Jayco is you can build and price any trailer they sell online. Went to our local RV show this last weekend and saw a Jayco 5th wheel we liked. They had the factory invoice taped to one of the upper cabinets. I took a pic of it with my phone. Came home to double check the pricing and the invoice was spot on with the prices Jayco has on their web site.
Getting 25-30% off that invoice price is another matter. Point is I don't know of any other mfg that allows you to build and price on their web site. It gives you an MSRP that's good nationally like buying a new car or truck. IMO all mfg should allow this.
I've never ordered a trailer. It would seem that if you were to sit down and go through the order process you would also be able to get the correct msrp and correct option prices. That's all assuming the selling dealer is up front during the order process.
I know that if you go to one of the wholesalers you can do the same if you request a price for one of their trailers. That's about the only way you will really know for sure that the msrp being shown is legit.

It seems to me that the percentage varies on manufacturer and type of rig. The bottom line depends on how far you are willing to travel to get the best price and the value you place on dealer service.

When I purchased my current Gateway I was able to get MSRP from the Manufacturer and take it with us to the dealer. We got 33% off of the MSRP and a new hitch installed for free without to much trouble.
