New Trailer Discount

20-30%
You'll do better on a new 2015 "left over" than a new 2016.
This is the time of year to buy the leftovers.

Dealer markup runs about 35% on most brands... That's where I start with my offers.

35%.... and that's where you want to end at.... so start your offer at 50% and work your way to 35%. (offer $10k with a goal of going no higher than $13k).

Of course, as others have mentioned, dealers are more likely to move older models, so you will naturally get closer to that mark negotiating one of them.

When you finance something you inflate the total cost easily by 30-40%. Pay cash.

cash

Specifically this is what I have been wondering all weekend....So if the camper I want costs say $34,000 and I walk into the dealer with cash instead of financing and say I want to order "this" model with all the upgrades and other options ....(because the one I want has at least 1000 in packages and I want some other stuff) I should start 30- 35% less then MSRP?

It doesn't hurt to ask, all they can do is laugh at you and say no. I was looking at a left over model year car one time and asked what the price was. He said, "how much will you pay"? I gave him a price about $5,000 less than the going price for a new model. He said, "that's a ridiculous offer". I said, "well you asked what I would pay, and that is what I would pay". I walked on that deal, the guy was a jerk.

I've walked on many deals. Car/RV dealers always hate me by the time I actually buy. I pay cash, but never tell them that I'm paying cash until I get their best price possible. They make money selling financing. I never lie and tell them I'm financing. They just assume so. When I demand to know the total cost, they will finally tell me, all the while thinking they will make some back when they sell the loan. If it's not good enough I tell them to call me when they decide to be reasonable. In that game, whoever flinches first, loses. If they call me I get their offer out and get them to tell me what's changed. They called first, ie. they flinched. If nothing has changed, I don't waste the time and effort to go back down there and haggle. I go elsewhere. Their job is to get as much of your money as possible. Your job is to give them as little as possible... In order to do this successfully, you must divorce yourself from the feeling that you have to have this car/rv/boat/airplane, or whatever it is. They are trained to play on that emotion. Have fun...

Start with the RV trader - do a search for that make and model nationwide. If it's new, you'll see the spread on dealer "asking" price. There are also some wholesale dealers (out of state) that do deliveries, but you'll be out of luck when it comes to service... Not that most RV dealers have service departments that are worth much anyway.

This is great advise. I hear exactly what you are saying.... I know what I want... but if I can't get it I don't mind the continued search..... someone will want to make that great deal.
