New trailer purchase

Went to the LA RV show with the intention to purchase a new rv and was looking at Tiffin even met and spoke with Bob Tiffin and his wife. Lovely people, but ended up buying a Grand Design Reflection 315RKTS.

Now I need a truck. Eyeballing a new Ford Super Duty 6.7 diesel crew cab.Click image for larger version

Been ot off the tt game for almost 14 years. I chose to not do the distribution and hitch with the dealer, so input is appreciated. Best brands etc.

I have a month to pick it up and get a truck.

Very nice TT.

If you can find a F-350 6.7 diesel with the heavy duty trailer package I am pretty sure it comes with a 3" receiver on the hitch. It will have 2 reducer sleeves. That truck might not need any WD hitch.

That is a big travel trailer but the F-350 is a very capable truck. If you decide on a WD hitch I had a Drawtite that I liked.

I tow a camper probably around the same size with a 250 and the 6.7l. The 6.7l Ford diesel in the 250/350 series is an incredible tow vehicle. Not much else to say. Strong as an ox, great mileage, easy maintenance, well put together.

New trailer purchase

I have a 2017 F250 Crew Cab SB Powerstroke and a slightly smaller/lighter TT. In good weather, no need for a fancy WD hitch with sway control. In windy conditions when you're in a hurry to get home and cruising at 75mph (no problem for the the 6.7) you'll be glad you have a good hitch setup.

Knowing what I know now, I'd spend an extra $1k to get the F350, and get a decent WD hitch with sway control (Equal-i-zer is a decent affordable brand.) Also, if this isn't your daily driver, I'd recommend a long bed with 5th wheel prep for Max payload and flexibility in case you want to upgrade/future proof....

I tow my 315RLTS with a Blue Ox hitch. Great hitch. Equalizer's top hitch is good for 1400lb tongue weight, not enough for the 315 IMHO. I use the 2000lb hitch. Unless you're looking at a dually I wouldn't think of skipping a WD hitch with sway control.

Agree completely. Looking at F350 6.7 sb srw.

Have not identified a hitch yet.

Looking at a 14k hitch setup with tw around 1200 lbs and built in sway control.

I've owned a 315 since 2016. Your tongue weight will very likely be well over 1200lbs. Forget about the 1065lbs advertised by Grand Design, it's hype. In your paperwork you should have a weight sheet showing tongue, axle and side to side weights for your specific trailer as it left the factory. That's totally empty with no propane or battery. All your storage is ahead of the axles. My '17, which was 300 lbs lighter than the '20, ran well over 1400lbs with no water on board. Some folks have reported tongue weights over 1700lbs.
Great trailer, great truck, don't skimp on the hitch.

Will do. Take delivery of the trailer Nov. 9th. Have not purchased a truck yet. Will use my brothers truck to take delivery. Late Nov. or Dec for truck.

Still need to sell my class A too.[emoji15]

Will post here as I go.

Thanks
Bill

If it weren't for the GM auto strike I would recommend you look at the new 2020 GM 2500HD trucks. From what I have researched GM made an already solid frame even more solid by adding I think 2 cross members.

I have not seen this truck yet, darn striking auto workers, but I want to see how the trailer hitch is attached. If my suspicions are right, it will be designed as part of the frame. The hitch on my 2017 F-250 looks that way and looks to be attached really well.

If you are looking at used trucks I recommend a 2017 or newer F-250/350. Preferably a F-350 for added capability.

Thanks. I am a former Duramax (2500HD) owner, circa 2004 with the first gen motor. Loved that truck. I have started looking at Chevy's and GMC's. They definitely seem to be a bit less expensive.

Been looking at trucks and hitches. The new trailer has a gvwr of 10995 (11k). At full 15% tw that puts it at 1650. Should I get a hitch to accommodate full 15% tw? Would that require a 2.5 in receiver (class v)?

Want to do this right. I already know I am better off with 350/3500, am currently looking. Do the 1 tons come with class v receivers ?

You should start a new thread for this issue.

By all means get a hitch rated for the full gross tow weight and greater than 15% for the tongue weight. Just google the hitch receiver capacity.

My 2017 F250 6.7 Lariat:

 925 lb.-ft. of diesel torque
 27,500 lbs. max. 5th-wheel towing capacity2
 21,000 lbs. max. conventional towing capacity2

The hitch is designed to distribute enough weight forward that they say you dont need weight distribution gear. Ive towed heavy 5th wheel and goose neck trailers and around 15,000lbs conventional (equipment trailer) with nothing but complete satisfaction.

Also the exhaust brake works. I set my cruise on 55 and engage the exhaust brake and rode it down what we call “3 Mile” in the Sierras on I-80 with 15k lbs behind me (skip loader on an equip trailer) and never picked up speed all the way to the bottom. Then I cranked up and ran up the other side at 65 effortlessly.

These trucks aren't cheap but I have no complaints about performance, comfort, and quality. They do have way to many idiot warnings, but you get used to that.

I don't tow heavy often with this truck but when I do it is pure pleasure.

Editors note: Exhaust brakes work best at higher RPM where more exhaust is created to supply sufficient back pressure against the restriction of the brake. So running around 3000 down hill when using the EB seems to work well.
