If the butyl caulk is still pliable and you can get most of the crud scrubbed off, there is no reason to remove it.
I don't like to leave butyl exposed, so I brush the Dicor lap sealant over the top of the butyl..
Tweety's RV has the best prices I have found on Dicor.
