Thoughts about best TT for FT living/travel couple

Wife and I are getting geared up to make the move to FT. Can anyone help in some best possible TT considerations.

Without a lot of personal info we can't really help "you" determine the best TT for you. We can tell you that camping is fun and FT'ing is not the same as camping. A TT seems to be a pretty economical way to go if you already have a tow vehicle.

How much do you enjoy doing laundry? If 3 hrs once a week in a laundromat sounds like fun, you can enjoy any RV without a washer/dryer. If a weekly laundromat soiree is not your cup of tea, find an RV with a washer dryer.

Now look for a floorplan you like. Try the bed, you will throw out any mattress that comes with the unit or cover with a 4" foam topper. Do you want to do gymnastics over your partner to get out of bed? If not, look for a walk-around bed instead of a bed that is sideways to the trailer (gaucho). You don't need as much room as you think. Carry less stuff, if you REALLY need something, you can buy it on the road.

enjoy the hunt, you'll be back for more!

There are now very nice 3 slide trailers from just about all manufacturers. They will need a SRW 1 ton diesel truck to pull them.

Laundry - best to have washer / dryer with the trailer but would not be a deal breaker for me. I followed the sun so tee shirts and shorts is what I wore. Every two weeks I needed to get quarters and go to the laundry.

As for a TT I have always liked Air Stream trailers but they are nose bleed expensive for the room you get. For a few years Keystone built a like trailer to Air Stream. Look for a used Keystone Vantage trailer are much more reasonable cost. The Air Stream does not have a slide while Vantage has 1 shallow slide.

If you are going to follow the sun just about any TT will do if you like the floor plan.

Good luck

One other thing-for a fifth wheel or TT of 30' or more, you'll need a 1T truck to pull. How much do you like driving your 1T truck around town to the grocery store or out to dinner or sightseeing? Take a drive in one and see how it fits. With a large TT or 5ver, you will be spending more time in your tow vehicle (TV) when NOT towing, so make sure you can take the ride.

I like the Outback we have and we also are planning to go FT in it here in a couple years. But I would also scope out some of the Grand Design models like Cumminsfan mentioned. They are pretty nice. And you can get one without shopping at Camping World where we live, which is always a plus.

You don't need a 1 Ton truck to pull a TT over 30'. We pull ours (38.5') with a dry weight of 10K with our 3/4 Ton diesel like a dream. Now, that said if I didn't already have the 3/4 Ton, and was buying one today, I would look at a 1 Ton just for the extra payload down the road and the low price difference. But it isn't necessary and I have not seen a TT my 3/4 Ton won't pull. They are not that heavy.

I owned a 30' 5ver for 17 years before trading it in on our MH. It weighed 13K all up, I converted the brakes to disc for safety. I would not pull that trailer with anything less than a 1T dually truck. My experience.

People here need more information before they can help.

Have you looked around? Which type do you like?

How much do you have to spend.

How will you be using the TT? At park or boondocking.

What TV do you have or how much do you have to spend on one.

What are your hobbies.

You need to evaluate a bunch of different models to determine the best floor plan for your needs. How much time will you spend inside, what will you do when confined because of inclement weather, is there enough room for meal preparation, can you lay out a hobby for several days and still function, can one watch the game and another a movie without too much interference, is the bed big enough, chairs comfortable, adequate eating area, shower big enough?

Once you find the floor plan that is best for you then find the TT that best fits those criteria within the budget you would like to spend.

I would hard pressed to find a TT I couldn't tow with my Ram 2500 CTD. FTMP I really haven't seen one from any of the big RV MFG's that I couldn't tow.

First off, Thank you for all your responses. My wife and I in 2 years are selling it all and boondocking. Don't want to spend our retirement in the same old place doing the same old thing. We would like to stay around 29' and under. We will have a budget of about 14k and want to buy out right. At that time we will up grade our truck from a F150 FX4 to a F250. We're not going to try and tackle the country all at once but will travel a bit. Just want any ideas as best built for the road. I know Air Streams are solid but I'm sure will be out of our budget. We'll be staying toward warmer climates and like a bunk house design. We don't need slides. Thank you again for your thoughts and ideas.

With 14K you will need to look at used, probably about 3 years old or older. For best built look at NASH or Outdoor RV or Lance. But your budget limits you and you may need to go older with those brands.

You should visit the various TT sites and find a floor plan you like and then try to find a used one.

You don't need a F250 for a 29' TT but might need it for a 5th.

For boondocking you will probably need to spend in the area of 1K-1.5K for solar and new batteries.
