Too much truck?
Hello I am new here, and want to say Hello to everyone.
We have a Silverado 3500 1-ton diesel turbo dually truck. We currently haul a 17-18k (loaded) 44-ft 5th wheel. We are thinking of "downgrade" to a travel trailer of 33-ft, 8000lb dry, 12k loaded. The primary reason is that so we can haul 2 toys, 1 in the trailer and 1 on the truck bed.
Our truck is rated to haul 23k max. Will the truck be "too much", or will the lighter travel trailer be "too light"? Could the trailer be too bouncy?
Thanks so much!

There may be a point where you'd be using too much truck to tow a 12K GVW trailer. I don't know if that point even exists, but I do know that a 1-ton dually is nowhere near it. You'll be fine, and the trailer will be fine.
Your modern pickup truck chassis is tuned to be pretty comfortable for the humans in the truck, so the vertical movements of the truck are relatively soft, even in a 1-ton dually. Also, the great majority of the trailer's weight (and ride) is handled by the trailer's own suspension.

I towed less trailer (29' and about 8K loaded) with a 2001 Dodge dually (v10 magnum) and never had a problem. I agree that you are not anywhere near having too much truck...I think it is the truck to have when towing that large/heavy of a trailer along with toys.

For hauling a sizable toy on the bed and a fully loaded trailer there is almost no such thing as "too much truck."

Unless you have more than one rear axle, you don't have too much truck. A modern dually rides just fine empty, so a light trailer is no issue.

When it comes to the Tow Vehicle I attened the Tim Taylor (As played by Tim Allen) school of MORE POWER MORE POWER.. Or the bigger the better.
I've seen very light trailers towed by semi tractors.. You can't have too much tow vehicle
YOu can have one that is too tall
And of course you may spend more on Fuel
But even teh smallest trailer can be towed by your Tractor (Truck)
NOTE: if it seems to bounce or sway (i had one that did) there are ways to tame it.. Proper weight distribution helps.. as do anti-sway devices.. I wound up with a friction sway bar on that one, worked great.

Agree with the others, you will be fine. I also have a 16' cargo trailer that I pull (when not camping and pulling the toy hauler). Empty it weighs less than 6,000 lbs. Even when pulling it empty, our F350 dually does just fine. We previously pulled a TT with a full slide that weighed around 9,000 lbs and the dually did great.

About the only thing that determines too much truck is if your wife does not like the ride.
Maintenance is also an issue, but not worth trading down.

Size matters. Too big is never a bad thing, or so I've been told.
There are always complaints if your rig is too small.
