I am new to RVs. What I'm looking at is a travel trailer and hit the road for a year. I have a 2003 Chevy z71 with a 5.3L engine. Does anybody have any suggestions on what, or what weight I can tow without tearing up the truck?

thank you

YES.. GM.. If you go to GM's web site (I think you need mychevy.com) you should be able to find the towing ratings for that truck. Based upon your VIN no less.

Z71 is an option package on many GM vehicles. What exactly do you have?? What rear end ratio do you have? How much does your vehicle weigh? And I mean scaled ready to camp weight?

I had a 99 GMC with the 5.3. Towed a 22' Nash all over the western US and Canada with no problems. Then I bought a 27' Komfort and had to buy a new 3/4 ton truck to pull it.
You will have to stay with a smaller trailer.

Depending on your gearing, either 7800# or 8800#, per this GM forum. That is not set-in-stone; much depends on how much weight is in your truck, loaded as ready to go camping. I recommend you use this towing weight calculator to accurately determine what your truck will safely tow.
