What Happens to Dead & Dying Trailers & Fifth Wheels?

Are there trailer junk yards like there are for cars?

Yes. Mostly Class A RVs, but they do take apart all types.

From my travels it seems a lot of them are put out to the farm. I see them along roads parked in a field corner, by out buildings, behind the barn or in a odd wood lot location. They are just rotting away. One old airstream Sovereign i see often is being used as a storage shed.

There is a place near me that buys old ones and resells the parts.

They end up in your neighbor's driveway with his out of work son-in-law holding band practice in it

Actually, this is a good question. I see many sitting on property or just rotting away next to a house with or without a tarp. It would seem some "junkyards" with RVs of all types would be in order.

Fact is, many trailers are so lightly made that it takes little time to knock one to pieces. Unfortunately the frame isn't strong enough to reuse for a utility trailer or anything else. No hydraulic car crusher needed, just a couple of kids with hammers. Little good for storage, maintenance is needed to keep from leaking. Now an old school bus, can serve as a storage shed for long periods of time.
