What if.... what would you do?

What if you're on a long trip and suddenly realize your black tank (or gray) tank needs dumping? They can't hold another drop. Say you're out in the AZ desert someplace or miles from anywhere in the wheat fields of Kansas. What do you do? How do you get them emptied when you don't know the area or where the nearest dump-station is... or the nearest you can find is many miles away? Or worse yet, you can't even get a signal on your mifi to look for a place?

Do you:

1. Find a desolate area and dump them knowing it not likely anyone would ever walk over the spot.
2. Haul them around full and use the weeds at the side of the road to relieve yourself.
3. Desperately hope there's a town close enough down the road before you explode.

Once when family camping as a child, my dad did dump the black tank at the side of the road, but only after hours of stink and no where else to dump. To make matters worse, he made me do it. We were in the middle of the desert somewhere in Mexico. It's amazing how fast it shoots out the hose!

Choices, choices, choices

In my opinion you have two choices: #1 and #2

#1 - Do the politically correct thing, post that you'd hold it in those full tanks and you wouldn't do anything to hurt Mother Nature, that you'd sing Kumbya as the tanks splashed, etc.,

or

#2 - the crappy option of just finding that isolated spot, pull the lever and say Ahhhhhh......

I wonder if we would ever be that far away from finding a dump station? Seems like with a little planning one wouldn't encounter that problem.

A few years back at the end of a Holiday weekend, we stopped at an interstate welcome staion with an RV dump station. After a few minutes of dumping black- all started to back-up/ overflow! Quickly shut RV valve. Went into report the problem. No one knew what to do! Told us to move on! Problem: our sewer hose was still "full". We ended up disconnecting (lots of trash bags to lessen spillage) and left the hose behind.

You didn't say what year you were hypothetically talking of, but assuming it's 2012, I'd get out my cell phone and call a friend who had access to wifi and find out how near the nearest town or dump station was.

If no cell signal, then I'd pick option #1, dump it in a desolate area, but not the whole gray and black tanks. I'd probably only dump enough to hold out till the next dump station. I mean, really folks, there's animal waste everywhere .... we're just talking a little more.

Sounds like poor planning to me. You should know where dump stations are before you need them. This is easy info to find on the internet before you even venture forth.

I would take option 1. I have never had to do that. Sometimes we have to make an intelligent decision when we don't want to. Considering all things, I would feel that I had taken the right option.

You'd probably be violating a load (no pun intended) of environmental laws by dumping the black tank in the desert. However, I'd probably do it if forced by the situation. If the spirit and intent of the laws is to reduce man's impact on the environment, as I believe them to be, I try to reduce my footprint along with everyone else. I also believe that one dumping out of, for sake or argument, 1000 tanks that were properly disposed of, would be a minimal impact on the environment. I would dig a hole and dump only as much black water as needed to to get myself out of the predicament.
