Wheel Balancing
I'm getting new tires with wheels next week. When I asked the RV place if they were balanced he said no, that travel trailer wheels aren't balanced.
Is this really the case. The tires are 205/75 R14 Providers.

As one of the biggest causes of tire cupping is unbalanced tires. Why not get them balanced. It's not that expensive.

The RV builders never balance the tires. They probably don't bother because the brake drums aren't balanced.

When we replaced tires last fall, I told the tire dealer to balance them...not a problem, they did it for free.
Why not balance them??

I do plan to have them balanced. I just wondered if the information I got was correct.

It is. We just got a TT and we're told the same thing. Our dealer recommended we get them balanced. We will.

Definitely get them balanced.
I had the tires on my horse trailer replaced by a dealer who didn't balance them and ended up with a trailer that was useless above 50 mph. The vibrations were felt in the TV. The dealer insisted that it couldn't be a balancing issue because trailer tires never needed balancing.
I wonder if some of these dealers don't want to invest in the balancing machines.
After that I make sure all my trailer tires are balanced.

Do it right, find a place that does spin balancing on the vehicle...

Those places are rare, but you are correct, that's one way that the assembly will be completely balanced. I have had to add as much as 5.5oz to a balanced wheel to compensate for the unbalanced drum. I know of no one that ever checked the balance of the tire, wheel and drum assembly. Folks just think that everything is fine.

Great question to check dealers honesty! Yes, keep using him. No, go somewhere else. Tires should always be balanced in my experience.

Spin balance or bead balance all tires need balancing I even get my utility trailers balanced.

If anyone can list one legitimate reason not to balance all tires on any type of vehicle I will let my wife cook you dinner.

I've placed the heavy spot of the tire opposite the heavy spot of the drum and no weights were required. Had the tire been balanced, the assembly would have been unbalanced.
What's for dinner?

Sorry Charley,
Sounds like you lucked out and the total assembly was in balance by what you did. That is something that we could all try but it would add a complete step in the process. You are correct that if the tire and rim are balanced then that combo with the drum could be out of balance. Luckily most drums are drilled to somewhat balance them.
I will check with my wife to see how she would feel about a nice tray of appetizers, with a nice cold one to go along with it.
