Wow, good question! Welcome to iRV2 . . .
You'll develop your own method based on your levels of comfort, pocketbook, area traveling, etc., but here are a couple of ideas:
- if you have a smart phone, get the AllStays Camp & RV app (actually, all of the AllStays apps are good, but this one is what we use the most).
- check out Passport America, (you join it, then get 50% off) will likely pay for itself after a couple of nights. (There's an app for Passport America that shows where the participating parks are)
- rely on campgroundreviews.com, we've found it to be more complete and pretty reliable as far as campground reviews.
- get very used to a good map resource (I use the resident map on our iPhones/iPads) to determine how far you might travel in a day, then begin you planning along the way.
- we also use a great app called "Finger Measure," let's your finger go along a map route and tells you the distance, gives you an idea on arrival timing, etc.
Those are just a few ideas, others will have some, too.
Have fun!

We use the Good Sam RV Travel Guide. This is a 1600 + page paper guidebook that can be found on line, or at RV dealers. It doesn't list every campground, but it comes close. Price, around $25. Also, as mentioned earlier, there are lots of on-line resources.
We rarely get advance reservations unless we are going to a specific destination and/or a very popular area.

Generally if it says "Resort", we keep on driving. You can always Google something like ---RV camp grounds, xyz city, state. Look at what is in the area and usually some reviews.

Google map works best for us... we usually know the general area we want to stop for the night and just search "campground". For a one-nighter we like a quiet place close to the interstate. Right now we are at Rolling Hills just off 65 between Montgomery and Birmingham. For me its easier than some of the other apps out there.

Go to Camp Ground reviews and it will list all the states then click on state and there will be a list of the towns and what campgrounds in that town and there web site, also Reviews of people that has stayed in that campground, also can pull up a map of the location of the campground.

I don't know about the rest of the country but, in MN and Iowa I go to the web site for the county I'm going to be in and then look at the parks mentioned there. But, I like small, out of the way, away from the main drag, type parks.

Jonnypip,
Lots of good advice above. But, what would you do to determine what hotel/motel you would stay at while traveling without a trailer? The search for an RV overnight is somewhat the same--look at reviews on the internet and think about the number of good vs bad reviews, remembering that what is trash to some is treasure to others...
some of the reviews about the same campground by different people doesm't seem to be possible.
You'll figure it out soon. Enjoy.
Joe
