when you guys upgrade batteries, do you still use the on board charger that charges when plugging the camper in? is that a good charger? where does one even find the on board charger?

Some do, some don't. The quality of the onboard chargers vary. I have been advised not to leave the unit plugged in when not in use, as it will likely increase the battery maintenance frequency on your part. Find out what you have onboard and research it. After you know what you have, look into a reasonable 3 stage charger, those I understand you can leave plugged in as they do the least harm to the batteries. (If your unit doesn't already have one onboard)

Best battery in my opinion is a pair of GC-2 Golf Car Batteries. Genuine DEEP CYCLE. unlike the MARINE/deep cyle or RV/deep cycle which are really starting batteries...

Cann't fit two batteries a GC-12 is a 12 volt battery, less capacity than a pair of GC-2s and a bit harder to find but still a True Deep Cycle Golf Car battery.

Constrictor:
Yes, I use my onboard converter, BUT, I upgraded mine to Power Dynamics Inteli-Power® 4600 Series

This one does a lot of smart things so it won't boil the heck out of my new batteries.

Here's a short list:
  • Charge Wizard 4-stage charging system built-in dramatically increases battery life
This converter/charger will not boil the battery
Intelligent way to charge and maintain your RV battery
Easy to install Replaces these converter sections: Parallax/Magnatek 6345, Parallax 7345, Parallax 8345, and WFCO 8945

And here's a link to the their website that explains a little more about it.
https://www.progressivedyn.com/rv/po...r-4600-series/

Since my rig is so old the old converter was pretty simplistic and although I must admit I wasn't thinking ahead when I bought it, it turns out it was a very smart move. I just replaced it because the old one had a fan that was making noise everytime we plugged into shore power.

This was an exact replacement for my old one and it fit right into the old space. You'd have to touch base with them to see if they make one for your rig.

Let us know what you wind up doing.
Thanks!
