Will we be disappointed?

We (me, husband, and three kiddos - 7, 5, 2) currently have a 2005 Forest River Wildcat 26' fifth wheel. We bought it used in 2011 when middle child was 10 weeks old and have loved it ever since. Fast forward 5 years and we still love camping, but the sleeping arrangements have gotten to be a pain. We have to make and unmake both the table and couch beds daily. I happened to stop by a lot with my sister and brother-in-law recently and after seeing some prices we are considering selling ours and purchasing a newer TT with better sleeping arrangements. I'm not totally convinced we need to do this, but the hubby is adamant that we buy a new TT. We're looking in the 24' to 28' range. Tow vehicle is not a problem. We're pretty low maintenance when it comes to amenities - we just need an air conditioned place to sleep, a kitchen, and a bathroom. I basically kick everyone out of the camper in the morning and we play and get dirty all day and only come in to bathe and sleep. My question is this - will we regret not having a fifth wheel? Towing wise? Space wise? What are we not thinking about? What do we need to know when purchasing one new?

Nelkins, I can't say whether you will be disappointed not to have a 5er, but I do think your enjoyment factor will go up if you have convenient sleeping arrangements. We're a family of four with ten and twelve year old girls, and we ALMOST bought a smaller TT where you had to make out the table and couch into beds. Luckily, common sense prevailed, and we got a 29' bunkhouse trailer, which is just barely adequate because the bathroom, sink, and bunks are all at the back end. (Makes it hard for everyone to get ready for bed at night and ready to go in the morning.) With healthy senses of humor we made it work on a 5k mile, 3 week road trip this summer to the Southwest from the Southeast. There's no way we could have made it without everyone having there own little space to sleep. We would have quickly tired of converting the interior each night and morning. There were some nights when all we could do was fall in the bed, and it would have been no fun making out beds. It was bad enough hooking/unhooking on an almost daily basis for three weeks. I tow with a 1/2 ton truck too, so I'm not of the opinion that you must have a 5er and 1 ton tv to participate (although I plan to end up with that one day probably). Sounds to me like y'all might be ready for an upgrade!

What is your tow vehicle? If it's a 1/2 ton I would forget a fifth-wheel!

Yeah, I can imagine a bunk house configuration would make a lot of sense as everyone would each have their own space. A lot of time left for making great memories at those ages.
I think as long as you do your research and find what will meet your wants / needs you shouldn't be disappointed. Most everything about RVing is a compromise, huh?

Happy motoring.

We currently have an F250 that we use to pull the fifth wheel.

My situation is somewhat the same and we've decided on a White Hawk 28dsbh made by Jayco. We are empty nesters, but we now have a population explosion of grand children... 6 in 6 years... so a bunk house model is now just about a must. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I'd be very interested in the Winnebago Instinct 33BHSL - although this is longer than you mentioned you wanted.

If you care to be free of slides... you might peek at some used bunk model airstreams...

And since you already have the truck, pin box, and 5ver experience.. it makes perfectly good sense to see if 5er bunks exist?? I don't much about 5ers floorplans....
