Back Up Camera Inquiry

Hi,

Thinking about installing a backup camera to aid when backing up with a boat or utility trailer.

Would like a "high mount" for camera to get a good view of trailer attitude and path to aid in backing.

Would also like a decent sized monitor so that I can see without out having to hunch over close to screen. Want to be able to sit up straight and be able to use mirrors and camera simultaneously.

Has anybody had any experience, good or bad, with any particular models?

Thanks in advance.
Chris

Just a thought....back in MN I had a hitch on the front bumper if my truck. And easy way to launch a boat, and the hitch unpins and slides out when not needed.

You "steer" it right down the ramp, can see everything perfectly, and your drive axel is always dry. Lots of folks use a front hitch

I am also researching this issue. It seems that the smallest commonly available TV's and monitors today are 19 inch. Has anyone mounted one this size in a Class A? It would certainly address the ease of viewing concern.

They also have this one with a separate mountable 3.5 inch screen

I have dealt with these guys twice and have been very pleased with their technical help and sales service:
RVCams Backup Cameras and Rear View Systems

I like the idea of front bumper, have seen a guy use it, pretty neat and easy...

Rosco Camera

I bought a Rosco camera from Amazon about $200. It includes a 60' cable. All you have to do is mount it on the back, run the wire underneath to your vehicle and power it. We just use a cig outlet for that. You can set it up to run with the back up switch or whenever it is plugged in. It's nice to see what's back there, so we use it whenever we're traveling. It has a seven inch screen so you can just place it somewhere convenient or mount it.

Good Luck,

Bill

I got a Rosco camera and it works great. The mounting gear they send you is for a permanent mount. I didn't want to drill any holes in the dash. I bought ash tray holder that fits into the drink cup holder. I put in 3-4 small screws to hold it in place. Wired it with a cigarette lighter adapter. I found I can get to interior of the RV through the storage area. I extend the wire to the dash when driving and pull it back when at a site. Didn't have crawl under the RV.

Eye Ball....

I put a product review in the tech area. We wanted something for our 5r.

Wanting simplicity, value, ease, dependability, opted for the Eye Ball.
It is magnetic, you can adjust it's view, wireless.

Now the reviews at first had me concerned as there were a couple that mentioned picture was sometimes fuzzy. I can attest to the fact that others said this comes from distance involved. and the biggy BATTERIES YOU USE!

If you use those cheap .99 batteries and I did just to experiment, they were fuzzy at times.
Put in the quality name brand ones and perfect picture all the time.
Our rig is 38' and factor in the truck so where the screen to camera is probably close to 50'.

My home base spot's utility box is right in the middle of the back of my lot and requires me to be within a couple of inches to fit in.

I can back that thing right up and put it on a dime. The other thing I like is I can use it for hooking up my boat, and also my Mower trailer for my business use. Very happy with it.

I've never had luck with wireless cameras on a vehicle. I think its due to too many different electrical devices running on the truck, engine, alternator, radio, etc. Of course I've never bought an expensive one either. You might try surveillance cameras you can get one with 3-4 cameras and a split screen system. I don't know if they would be small enough though.

Note to RV and trailer PRODUCT MANAGERS cameras are pretty small and cheap now, put three of them on your RVs one on each side facing down the side and one on the back, use split screen software for viewing with a touch mode to enlarge one view to full screen. This is the 21st century get with it!

The earlier ANALOG wireless cameras were more susceptible to interference. The current generation of DIGITAL wireless cameras are very good. They have good range and very clear picture.

I have tested the ASA digital wireless systems and found them to be very good on our 41' motorhome. This wireless rear camera system has one wireless camera and two wired inputs to use for side cameras.

I will be very soon adding another rear camera vendor that has digital wireless technology that can support up to 4 wireless cameras on one monitor.
