Don't Buy Dometic!

My Dometic refrigerator has only lasted me 4.5 years. It is one of the few NOT covered under the recall even though it has the same problem stated in the recall. How convenient!

I have contacted several people at Dometic and they all agree that it should have lasted 8 to 10 years but will not help me out with the cost of repair. When they asked if I purchased the extended warranty I asked, "Why? Is it something that is necessary on Dometic Refrigerators?" The Supervisor of Customer Service told me no, it is to cover special circumstances. I said I have one of those special circumstances and I think Dometic should help me out. They say, "Not without a warranty." I asked about the 5 year warranty on the cooling unit and was told they stopped doing that prior to my year model. I would assume because they had too many failures within that 5 years and it was not cost effective. I told them if it comes to replacing the refrigerator I will choose to install a Norcold because I need a refrigerator that will last longer than 4 to 5 years. They told me that is my option, in other words, They Don't Care! I have worked my way up the ladder to the Supervisor of Customer Service with the same results. When speaking to the Warranty Department I asked to speak with someone else and was transferred me to an automated service center locator. Not too bright there.

All I am asking for is a replacement cooling unit. I am willing to pay the labor cost for the installation.

Several different rv mags have people who go to these companies to try and help them in these type cases. A lot of the companies will at least meet them half way when the mag contact them. Some newspapers and city news agencies also have people who try to get things like this corrected also and again usually they get something done in most cases. I think its the fact that companies dont want this info out in the media for all to read and or hear about. Just a suggestion and good luck.

Good suggestion Lee. After the repair I will be contacting these magazines and see what they can do. Thanks.

I recently called Dometic to inform them although the serial number of my unit did not fall into the list of units qualifying for the recall, I was experiencing the same problems identified, heavy anmonia (sp) smell, yellow powder residue in the compartment, etc. Turns out my call was on the last day of my Parts Only warrenty. I explained that I would be unable to get my MH in for repairs before the warrenty expired, like tomorrow. Dometic voluntarily extended my warrenty one month to assure coverage when parts request came in from my repair facility. My repairman said he thought Dometic would cover Labor also, they had done that in the past. It appears to me that Dometic is trying to stand by its' responsibility to its' customers.

Mine is not listed on the recall even though it is experiencing the same failure as the recall.

Ours was too new for the recall, but the cooling unit still failed and was replaced under warranty.

Full-Timers, was the failure of the cooling unit due to a restriction (blockage) or a leak?

There was no blockage. The cooling unit developed a leak.

The first "RV" refrigerator I ever owned was a Dometic... I bought it in 1978 and sold it in 1998...
That Dometic fridge lasted a little over 20 years with absolutely no problems...

and it was still working perfectly when I sold it to a local contractor who wanted to use it in one of his equipment trailers.

The next three RVs I owned also had Dometic refrigerators in them...

AND ... they all worked perfectly... never had a problem with any Dometic fridge I ever owned..

My current RV is a 1995 model and the Dometic fridge in it is working perfectly...

absolutely no problems of any type in over 13 years of everyday constant use... 24/7/365 ... never been turned off...

SO.... to sum it up.... Dometic is no worse or better than any other brand of refrigerator...

EVERY BRAND will have it's good and bad points...

Just because you find one bad apple in a bag of many apples, is no reason to throw away the entire bag of apples and then bad mouth the orchard where that one bad apple came from..

Dometic refrigerators are great...

John
