Generator to run 15K BTU air conditioner.

Hello all,
I am shopping for a generator for next season. I have read a bunch online and thought I had my mind made up for the Champion 3400 dual fuel. now after reading some more I am seeing a lot of people saying it will not start the 15k AC. I definitely trust this groups opinions over Amazon reviews, so hopefully some owners can reply with the real deal. Also would like to know if the dual 2200 watt Honda's would be better.

Thanks everyone

I have the older champion 3100. Works ok with a 12,500 air conditioner. If your 15,000 won't work with 3400, install a soft start kit in the air conditioner.

X2 on installing a soft start kit on your AC. If you research those kits, you'll see that the initial start pulls ~30+ amps which pops most small generator breakers, but after the smart kit install the draw is reduced to ~15 amps (from what I recall).
With the kits, many have been able to use 2000 watt portable gennys

This works if you have a thermostat that allows you to start just the fan. Start the fan and when it gets going then switch the thermostat to AC. About the same function as a soft start.

I have a 15k AC and it works great with my Westinghouse igen 4500. Dual Honda's would be nice but I absolutely love my remote start/stop...

My generator has a nice size gas tank as well. Not too loud.

I have no experience with the Champion but I have had a Yamaha 2800i inverter generator for over a decade and used it to start and run 15K ACs on 3 travel trailers. My father-in-law had one as well and used it to start/run 15K ACs on 2 fith-wheels.

I have even started 15K ACs on the Honda 2000 inverter-generators but they don't run long before the breakers trip out since a 15K will exceed the max steady state current limit of 13.3 amps on the Hondas.

This is the first thing I would do regardless of what generator you choose.

Any generator over 3000W is too heavy for ME to pick up and put in the bed of a pickup truck. Watch this video. Westinghouse iGen2500 Vs Predator 3500

Note that he does say he had already installed an EasyStart soft starter

IMHO, Honda "missed the mark" when they came out with the EU2200i. I think the "sweet spot" for portable generators for the RV market around 2800W (peak, 2400W continuous).

Honda does have one slightly more powerful, the EG2800i. It is bulkier and quite a bit heavier than the EU2200i and louder. Still it is smaller and lighter than the EU3000i.

Had the same problem on a friends a/c and generator, I tried a Supco spp6 hard start kit. That didn't work either, so I ended up using a spp10, the biggest one Supco made and that did the trick

Thanks everyone.

Does the soft start kit do any damage to the AC?

Thanks

The " Hard Start Kit" will extend the life of your compressor. It assists the compressor starting when you experience low voltage. Without it the compressor can stall on startup and overheat

Is anyone running their 15k AC with the Champion 3400 dual fuel generator?

Check the specs on that dual fuel Champion. It put out LESS power when running on LP.

I know itís Harbor Freight but my predator 3500 worked excellent for the 2 years I had it. Sold when we got our Toy Hauler with on board generator. With that being said, wish I would have bought the 2 predator 2000w generators with the parallel kit. Those 3000w+ are HEAVY
