Considering taking first step into GPS. Have looked at Garmin Nuvi 350, which has many features we like. However, we would appreciate other's experience in this area. We are looking for a receiver which can be easily moved between coach and toad. Question on this Nuvi model, it appears that this unit must be mounted directly on the windshield, which creates a problem with access due to the large distance from driver/passenger to the windshield, is this assumption correct? Or can it be mounted on the dash as an alternative? Any other suggestions for this application?

The NuVi 350 does mount to the windshield with a well designed suction cup type mounting platform. Mine also came with a plastic disc that is smooth on the face which can be attached to the dash or other surface. The suction cup then attach's to the disc.
I move my NuVi back and forth between my dually truck, my Jeep Wrangler, and my wife's Yukon with ease. It plugs into the 12v accessory socket and sticks to the windshield or the disc as described.

Concur with Hitchhiker. Can be mounted on windshield or dash mount with the disc included in the box.
I find the unit easy to use and pretty darn accurate at lest here in the Tidewater Virginia area.

I agree with the others. I ordered a set of discs from Garmin (2 per pack) and installed one on my Jeep dashas well as on the motorhome dash.
Since everything is touch screen, the windshield mount is too far away.

There is also a bean bag style mount that Garmin sells. It makes it easy to move from one vehicle to another.

We just bought a Garmin nuvi 200W !!!! It's a pretty nice unit "wide screen and all" Very inexpensive out the door with an instant $70.00 rebate at the Office Depot.
I've already downloaded and installed the 2009 map set and operating software. I initially had a problem where the operating system reported that it didn't have enough room for the new map software. I contacted Garmin TS and they responded to delete all the Voice, Language and Help files that were not in American_English. Once I did that the update went right through! it took practically all day to do the update.
I also installed the RV icon!
I have a 2GB SD RAM chip in the unit. What do you guys suggest that I put on it? It doesn't appear that I can use the slide-show function to show pictures off of the SD RAM.
I'm a little confused about how to use the SD chip to its advantage.

I noticed Costco has a Garmin C550 featured on their home web page. I know very little about these GPS's but provide this FYI.

Flyfisher,
You could cut a piece of plexiglas (available at Lowes) to fit on your dash, add some velcro strips to the back, stick it on the dash and use the suction cup to attach the Garmin.
Good luck,

I mount my Garman suction cup to the upper right
corner on the back up monitor. Easy to read and
program, and does not block view of the toad.

G'Morning flyfisher! Picked up our Nuvi last year prior to our first Alaska trip this past summer and we loved our unit. We particularly liked the size which could easily mount on dash of MH, or dash in toad, OR, be carried in shirt pocket. One thing though....we had to name our Nuvi and since SHE really seems to get a kind of annoyed tone to her voice if you're off the "calculated route" and she has to "recalculate two or three times...hence...her name is BRUNNHILDA!!!... and BOY, she'll let ya know if you're off track!!! We like her though and rate the Nuvi pretty high! Steve & Lynette

Yea my wife named our 200 W ,
missey and p issey missey, but we like her too and I can even read it without my glasses.
Driver, sorry no body has helped you out but it sounds like you know more about the 200 W than I do.
I can transfer tracks, routes etc to and from my Garmin Legend handheld thru Mapsource but I don't know if you can do that with the Nuvi.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 5000 and also a Garmin Street Pilot 2610. I have the newest version of Mapsource (City Navagator North American 2008-version 9). I do my routing on either a laptop (on the road) or my desktop (at home) and then download the routes and waypoints to either the Nuvi 5000 or the Street Pilot 2610. The only time I had a routing problem was when I had several versions of the mapsource on the desktop and did routing on the 2610. After blowing away the earlier versions everything worked great. I would also like to add that the Garmin help desk is fantastic. I was having a problem with mapsource (City Navagator North American 2007) and they sent me the latest version in the mail ...free. They have been great when I had problems and have always been able to take care of me. If you have questions about what your unit will or will not do call the help desk.
