Friends bought MJ to have a US phone # when they're on vacation in Mexico. What a turkey! Voice is almost inaudible and there are periods of silence up to 10 seconds long when one person is speaking and the other can't hear them.

Friend was told that it's a function of the capacity and speed of the local, privately owned computer server in Mexico and they can't do anything about it.

We got one a few years back when they first came out. Worked off our PC over high speed line with Bright House. Very poor service and when we called MJ they said it was Bright Houses service. Wedon't use it and went direct with Bright House phone service. You get what you pay for. Iam sure it works for some.

I find that the MJ works really well when you have a good internet connection. Much better than Vonage and it will work for receiving faxs, but again the connection has to be solid. Best $40 I ever spent though I don't use it much since I got the DroidX.

I used magic jack. Worked great. We have skype now which also works great. Magic jack was nice because you could use an actual phone.

I have a MJ and it works great under most conditions. First of all, you need a GOOD Internet connection. Second, you need to be sure the computer is not overly busy in disk or CPU operations. Third, you need a relatively fast computer. Any limitations in any of these will result in a poor connection and/or echos.

I have a MJ and it works 99% of the time very well. I agree when I make phone calls the computer is only running the MJ and the call is constant. I live in Canada and we can't get real great inexpensive phone (cell or home) calling plans so MJ is my choice.

I have used it to make calls in trailer parks, McYuckies parking lots, Starbucks parking lots, outside an RCMP building in BC and I had no problem being heard by the persons I was calling.

Can't see any reason for MJ when Skype does the same thing for free.

Skype is free if you are talking to other with Skype or if you want unlimited calls to phone you pay $2.99 a month, which cost more then Magic Jack per year. I am using Skype.

I purchase MJ back when it was first introduced. Put it on a P3 1.5 Ghz P/C running XP. I like it so much and it has worked so well that when MJ came out with the 5 year plan, I got that. Now it costs me a buck a month to call anywhere (in the USA). Quality is top notch. I do not know about service because it has been flawless so I have never needed to contact the company.

A friend has one in Europe and he can call back to North America free. He moved to Austria a bit ago and calls whenever he feels the need to chat. Still for the same low monthly fee. The MJ also lets all users call anywhere from Alaska to Puerto Rico for free.

I have been told that MJ will not work with "HUGHES NET" (at least not with the basic service) .
Anyone have any information on this ?

This is the answer from MJ FAQ

NO.
We do not recommend using magicJack with satellite Internet.
Though satellite Internet service is considerably faster than a dial-up connection, it is traditionally slower than many cable, DSL and other high-speed Internet connections.
