We've had to repair two of our shades when the rewind assembly failed.
This assembly has a plastic shaft that breaks. When this happens, your only recourse is to take the shade off the bracket, take it apart and replace the broken parts. The parts are readily available from MCD and are easy to replace. MCD claims the new parts are a new design. Hopefully that's the case because the original parts were under designed.

Thank you! Since My MH is a 2012 I am assuming that I have the new design. It was put into service in early Nov. and I will expect the dealer to repair under warranty. It is nice to understand what the problem may be!

I had one that suddenly went all the way to the top rapidly when I let it go and I thought something was broken. With some instruction by a factory tech I took it apart and checked it out.
There was nothing broken but I now had the situation you describe and had to roll enough back on the roller so it could be readjusted.
While waiting for a warranty replacement I put it back together and adjusted it. It worked okay but would go out of adjustment from time to time. By that I mean that on the problem roller the speed adjustment would change. When the new one came in I installed it.
The point of this is that I was able to rewind and readjust the unit without too much of a problem.

I've wanted powered MCD shades for a long time. We went to an area FMCA rally last month where I got a price quote from an MCD dealer. I was quoted $6600 for seven windows...this was more than I was willing to pay. I then got a quote from a competitor, Auto Motion Shades. Their quote was over $2000 less for motorized blinds. I did some research and found that Auto Motion has been around a long time. They have been providing shades to the trucking & RV manufacturing industries for a long time. They are just now offering their products to the end user. Problem is, they only have a few dealers/installers, and there are none in my state. I will have them installed when they sign up a dealer closer to me.

I live in Fl. and had Classic Coach Works in Lakeland install Auto Motion Shades for me last month. They were MCD's largest dealer but switched last year because of too many warranty issues. The brochure I got from Auto Motion shows a lot of MH Mfg. that used to use MCD have switched.
I have the auto glide ones, not the motorized and really like them.

We installed all the MCD shades ourselves, 10 window and the windshield. We saved a lot of money but it was a job to do.

Wow...manual or motorized?
Either way, with my back, I'd be in traction for a month!

WOW!! That is incredibly expensive. I was looking into doing cellular style shade for all my windows, but decided against it for now. I found a new product that uses LCD technology to adjust the transparency of a window. You can get adhesive sheets cut to order for around 85.00 per square foot.
I wrote and article for the rvnewsletter about it, you can read it at:
WanderMan: Look Ma No Shades! The Power Of LCD - Part 1
This may be a more "high-tech solution.
I'm still researching it.

I assume you are aware that there are companies already selling essentially the same product. Here's one of them:

In our sticks & bricks we had skylights that could be darkened to keep the sun out on summer days that used the same technology.

docj,
Yup..that company offers glass products only. The one I am looking into is a plastic film that adheres to your existing windows.
