Molded coolers
I want to get a molded cooler for the mh. I've done a ton of research but still don't feel comfortable about what to purchase. I'm down to two possibilities the Igloo Sportsman 55 quart or a Yeti.
The igloo is apparently on par with the yeti but about $150 less. Each have held their ice for 5-7 days in tests. You're probably saying it's a no brainer if one is less expensive and has about the same features get the less expensive. That's the way I'm leaning but would like some users input before I go off half cocked.
Has anyone had any experience with either.
Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

I have no experience with the yeti, because I think they are way over priced, I do not need ice to last for 5 days. Maybe others do.
So I have a Coleman cooler and ice last a couple of days here in the southwest, besides, you have to restock that cooler with drinks and food, so pick up some more ice when doing that.
If you are just using your cooler for more "fridge" space, for drinks then I would get the igloo, how many days are in between that you do not go to a store?
If I new I was going to be on an extended trip without going to a store, then I might consider a yeti.
But when I'm done using my cooler whats the difference if I dump out 1 lb of ice or 5 lbs

The tests showing Yeti's and other high end coolers holding ice for 5-7 days are only valid if you rarely open the coolers. Most of us open our coolers multiple times per day, getting drinks out. If that's how you use your cooler, then save your money and buy a $100 cooler; it will perform every bit as good as a $350 Yeti.

We purchased a Engel cooler they are the original designer of these types of coolers and have been around for over 50 years. The one we purchased was about 100.00 less than the same one from Yeti we use it quite often when we travel for a long period of time mostly to pack it with soda and water than leave it outside so we don't have to keep coming inside for drinks. Ice last for about 5 days.

The Yeti coolers work better than most because the walls are thicker - more insulation. That's important for fishermen and possibly boondockers as restocking ice can be a problem. Before you buy an Igloo Sportsman, google "igloo cooler flashlight" and do some reading - or viewing in the case of videos like this one:
I bought a South Jetty 38, which I keep in the front basement bin on the curb side for sodas and beer. That hurts ice retention while travelling as that bin gets warm. Also, my family is not as diligent as I am about fastening the lid latches every time it's opened and that hurts ice retention. I usually add ice to it every 2 or 3 days.
I'd steer clear of the Igloo unless you take a strong flashlight with you to pick out a good one.
Hope this helps!

I have not bought ice for my cooler for about 3 years since I found a better way. I freeze used milk bottles with water and about a quarter cup of SALT. It freezes at a lower temperature and melts faster. To experiment, try one and put it in with your ice.
I just keep trading the bottles from the freezer to the cooler. Works great and my beer is colder than just using ice.

I have a K2 - similar to Yeti - and love it. Use it mostly aboard the boat for extended cruising trips. When I bought it I read several comparisons and reacall that the Coleman XTreme performed on par w/ Yeti & K2. I chose the K2 for its ruggedness - I can use it as a seat.
I also understand that Wally World now sells a Yeti Knock-offs under the Ozark Trail name - no experience other than a charter capt I know uses one.

Try Cabelas. They have a good variety of high and mid end coolers.

I have the soft side cooler and it's awesome. The two guys who founded yeti started RTIC after cashing in and letting the noncompete lapse. Every RTIC cooler is priced at exactly half of its yeti counterpart.

I love my Bison Cooler. USA made in Texas. Cheaper than Yeti with better handles in my opinion. Great military discount. I've held ice for days in San Diego desert.

As others have said, "If you are in the cooler several times per day, you are not going to get the 5-7 days on your ice."
