Mounting battery box on top of the a-frame

Will be getting my new locking battery box in a few days. Will be mounting it on top of my a-frame just behind the twin propane tanks. I have two issues to ask advice on.

1. The back side of the box @ 27 inches is about 2 inches short of reaching the frame on both sides. I can make up the span with some L- channel. What are the thoughts concerning using self tapping 1/4 screws into the top of the frame to secure this channel?

2. If I use this type of L-channel would it be better to use steel or alum. I will be carrying 2 12V Gp 24's.

The sorry welds on the factory built between the rails tray are barely attached at this time on a 1 year old rig. Any feedback will be welcome and I will send pictures with whatever I come up with. Thanks a lot

I even bolted a piece of pressure treated wood to the angle to extend the width for 2 batteries. I hold the batteries down with cam straps. BTW, I also bolted the battery boxes to the wood.
