We ordered a Garmin GPS for our trip to the Perry, GA, FMCA rally last week, and had to wait a few weeks because this is brand new, but it got to us with a few days to spare. At first glance, it looks like a standard nuvi in a black case. But this is a new one called the nuvi 465LMT based off the 465T, both are designed for the Trucking industry, and the major difference between the two is this one has Lifetime Maps and Traffic. I wanted it because we are driving a Class A RV across the country this summer. I wanted a unit that will keep me on established truck routes so I have greater confidence that I'll have bridge clearance and clear all the weight restrictions. How does this know? Well, you enter in your vehicle data: height, axle weights, width, total length.
This is a great improvement over my 5 year old nuvi, so maybe more units will have this feature, but I'm impressed with Lane Assist, which guides users to the correct lane at the right time – especially helpful when navigating complex highway interchanges. If you are in 6 lanes of traffic, it will show you which lane you need to be in to stay on course (upper left corner).

It will also pop up warning signs, like curvy road ahead, or one that we ran into, a big Red Box showing the road ahead has a weight restriction (I had deviated off course). The one I DON'T want to see is this:

Like I said, this comes with Lifetime maps, which you can update 4 times a year, and lifetime Traffic. The traffic indicator is an FM receiver that picks up a signal in major cities and displays a colored circle in the upper left of your screen, showing Green, Yellow, or Red.

There is one more unit for the Trucking industry, the brand new dezl 560LMT. It offers a few more features and a slightly larger screen. But it costs a little more. The 465LMT retails for $399.99, the 560LMT retails for $529.99, and the older model 465T retails for $349.99.
I feel much safer on the road with one of these units, because my rig is 13'1", and each state has slightly different heights for their overpasses and bridges.
See ya on the road,

We have been using the Garmin 465T for a few years so hopefully this new version corrects some of the trucking version issues.
Regarding low clearance warnings, we often receive 'false warnings'. For example, last Friday we were driving on the PA Turnpike when the GPS told me to turn off at an exit well before our destination and take a parallel route. Knowing that part of the PA Turnpike, I ignored the GPS and continued as it gave me 'low clearance ahead' warnings. Turns out there was a 12 foot 7 inch clearance ON THE SHOULDER but plenty of clearance on the roadway.
Point is, with any GPS, study your route ahead of time and don't listen to its directions blindly.

I just ordered a 560, being interested in having routes that take into account the height clearances needed.... and the comment "study your route ahead of time" brought to mind a question I had after purchasing my first Class-A ... how do you learn of bridge and over-passes clearances on a proposed route ? I've always wondered how trucking companies plan their routes to allow for clearance.

Get the Rand McNally truckers atlas. Very handy to have.
http://store.randmcnally.com/road-at...d-atlases.html
It is cheaper at other vendors FYI
There is also POI's for your gps's that have bridge height data.
I have the garmin nuvi 1490t as I wanted the 5 inch screen so I could see it without glasses and it has a nice bluetooth capability. My old nuvi 350 had a truck or car route and they eliminated it and came out withe the trucker model. If the truck model had the 5 inch I might have bought that instead.

Reminds me of a trip I had in upstate New York a few years ago. I was warned of a low bridge I could use that would save me about 60 miles of reversing our course. It said something like 12' 4" on the bridge. I went and looked at it in the car since we were in the area for several days.
I grabbed a 20' piece of PVC, cut it to the dimension posted and went back to the steel, arched bridge. The PVC pipe fit exactly in the corners, with another two feet, or more, in the middle of the roadway.
When we left, I had the wife go ahead of me in the car, ride the middle of the road, and stop on the far side to wave traffic to stop as I approached and went through. It was in a rural low traffic area.
It worked out well-

I am very pleased with my new Nuvi the Model 1300LM. It has a lot of features that my 4 yo Nuvi Model 200W did not have especially updated maps. My focus was to get a Nuvi with LM and that's what I was able to do.
Regarding the 200W ... I gave it to my son and he's running a quad axle dump truck and he said it working very well for him.

For $10 more you can get the Nuvi 1350 and get Lane Assist and speed limits. The lane assist can be worth the cost of the GPS when trying to navigate through cities.

the lane assist is this different from some of the lesser expensive that say they have lane assist? does it primarily route you on just interstates?

That's a shot of the 1300LM. When I bought the 1300LM it was on sale and the 1350LM was not so the price difference was greater than $10. Yes lane assist would be nice but the 1300 speaks street names so it does help.
The 1300LM does not show posted speed limits as well. Height restrictions are nice to know especially if you're running in New England. I've come across a lot of height restrictions up there.
I run a thing called lane assist from the copilots seat! If I miss a lane ... I never hear the end of it.

Been looking for a new GPS, this new Garmin sounds like what I am looking for. Will have to do a little further research.
