I decided to try Odor Eliminator by Northern Explorer for my black tank after reading about it an RV magazine.

The directions say to add one scoop of the product to the holding tank along with one gallon of water. It says to add more during hot weather...essentially the same directions as most other dry powder treatments.

I am currently camping near Palm Springs California. It's very warm so a perfect opportunity to try Odor Eliminator.

Odor Eliminator has eliminated nothing more than my wallet. The odors coming from my tank remind me of the time I tried going without chemicals at all....yuk!

I am now up to four scoops of the product on my second tank of waste. It still does a very poor job of controlling odors even at that level.

I'm returning to "Happy Camper" immediately!

Craig

Where do the odors come from?
The system is sealed except for the roof vent pipe and the toilet bowl for a couple of seconds when you flush. If you have odor from somewhere else you have a problem that needs to be fixed, not hidden with perfumes.

There are a lot of us out here that use nothing but water and have no odor problems.

You also know that you will get odors from a vent under your bathroom & kitchen sink if the rubber seal is defective.
You need to replace with one of these most plumbing or Lowe's, Home Depot will have them.

Water only for this full timer. I HAVE found that heavily chlorinated water is a determent, and prolonged use will produce smell. Use of bleach in you clothes washer is a no no for a water only type person.

If you smell your black tank you have piping issues!
I installed an aftermarket vent pipe cap that creates a venturi effect from what ever direction the wind passes over it (not the kind that spins) and that solved my problems 100 percent

Folks, allow me to clarify so this doesn't get over-examined.

The odor I am referring to escapes only when the toilet valve is open, while flushing. I don't experience a constant odor from either waste tank.

I already have the Xtreme vent cap, which is helpful.

Please keep in mind that this thread is part of the Product Evaluations section. I was only relating my experience with a certain waste chemical. I appreciate the helpful replies, but my RV does not have a waste tank problem, nor do I want to start a debate on chemical - no chemical.

Thanks everyone.

Craig

Have never noticed any odor worthy of elmination, Even when I replaced the flooring under the toilet (the only offensive odor was from the rotting wood I pulled out and tossed in the dumper, No offensive odor came from the tank and the toilet was sitting in the next room so that was wide open)

I have tested several products and think you hit it on the head with all of them. The only thing they elminate is money from your budget.

The latest is Nature-zine. Near as I can tell it made no difference This stuff is supposed to help digest the solids and turn them into liquids.. Well, as it happens after a week of this in my tank I had to pump out being as it was 45 feet to the hole in the ground from the pavement where I could rest the rig (Soft ground between pavement and hole) Well,, I use a clear extension to hook up the pump.. And what I observed was the hardest job the pump has ever had emptying the tank.

If this is an enzyme you are just creating sludge. Need to go with Bacteria to really digest the solids without odor. See the link in my previous post, great info on gray and black water tanks. He recommends http://www.eco-save.com/. Getting ready to start using it in my MH.

Well we're happy Happy Campers too. Been using it last 2 years, we do alot of dry camping (with restricted water usage) and we still have clean sensors.

I know there's alot of controversy out there about tank treatments and whether they make any difference, but we're sticking with what has worked so far for us. So I'm with you on this one
