Has anyone had experience or can give input on Northern Tool's Curt Manufacturing RV Bumper Hitch, Model# E-100. This is a 2" reciever hitch, which can be bolted to the 4" Sq rear bumper tube of a trailer. I am thinking it could be used for a bike rack which could then be moved to the tow vehicles reciever hitch.

A big question - is that 4" bumper tube strong enough to carry a couple of bikes?

Thanks a bunch!

Bob, without knowing the type of trailer you have, all I can say is that the strength of the hitch system lies with the quality of the 4" sq. tube, and the way the tube is secured to the trailer. I certainly wouldn't tow anything with it until I took a good hard look or got a second opinion from a trailer hitch installer.
I think the hitch you propose here would be fine for holding a bicycle rack though.

Troth was correct in his statements, its all in how the tube is connected to the trailers frame. The receiver looks to have been a good choice. Had a spare tire and bike receiver/rack mounted on the rear of a prior 5th wheel with the a 4" square tubing bumper. It worked fine. Just check the connection to the frame.

Next time you're in a CG casually inspect every 4"sq bumper with a spare tire carrier or bike rack mounted. These bumpers usually are designed to look dressy, and carry your waste hose only. I suspect you'll find the majority bent and twisted from the weight and/or the torque imposed by the carrier.

Very good tip! Thanks!!!

I got the hitch and it is very sturdy in itself.

I will just use it to carry a two-bike rack. However, I think I'll mount it immediately next to the ladder AND the support coming from the trailer. Then I'll use heavy budgies to take some of the shock off of bumps in the road.I can weld so I might just make an extra re-enforcement to the square tube too.

Don't think I'll be stopped by the law for having to too strong!

Thanks again.

Got mine on and used it to attach a two bike carrier. It is one tough rig - as long as your 4" bumper is strong enough as mine evidently is. Only problem is my bumper is a tad over 4" so I had to adjust two of the bolt holes. Otherwise - LOVE IT!
