I agree - it needs a cover, not just for appearance, but also for UV protection.
There are several carriers on the market, including
THIS ONE. The advantage to the one in my link (and another one I have seen advertised in the RV magazines) is a lot lower lift height to get the tire in and out. You will need 2 people and a step stool or ladder out of the carrier in the picture above. OR you would need to unhook the toad and drop the carrier down to access the tire - IF you can get the pin out with the weight of the tire in place. Dropping the tire in the carrier may even need 2 people, especially if the spare was mounted on a wheel.
