Don't know why I keep calling them TSC when it's TRC, guess I'll just blame it on autocorrect

My Surgeguard failed after about 2 years. I called their customer service, was told it was out of warranty and my moly option was to buy a new one. I did just that! I purchased a Progressive. It has saved me 3 times so far and has been repaired for only the cost of shipping it back to them. No way would I waste my money on another Surgeguard!

I have a Hughes AutoFormer as my second line of defense if the SurgeGuard takes a big hit and requires a rebuild when I get home.

In 2006 I was runing just the SurgeGuard when the heat wave hit in July and every park I stayed at on the East Coast was under voltage. I bypassed since it was over 100 degrees out and eventually burned out the hard starts and had the blower fail in my basement air. I picked up two portable roll about AC units that I found on the reduced rack at Home Depot to get me by and replaced two of the sliding window panels with some 1/4" plywood to put their exhaust hoses through to keep the coach livable for everyone until the repairs could be completed.

After the repairs had been completed Camping World had the Hughes on the shelf and on sale so for a very good price so I grabbed it then and there and have not had an electrical failure since then.

X3 on PI. Very reliable and it won't "walk away" cuz it is hard wired!

We wouldn't get "hung up" on the inside the coach readout as the "box" it works with has no external readout. That box is mounted near the transfer switch and park plugin cable. When is the most important time for observation of the input info? When plugging in! That's a little hard to do when the readout is inside.

I'm with you H Miller. I have the PI portable. BTW been hooked up here since Jan 1, no locks on the unit and it hasn't walked away yet.

I'm anxiously awaiting using a new PI 30 amp portable model with our new Minnie when we head out on our first trip in 2014 in a few weeks!

I've had the PI hard-wired 50 amp unit for several years. Saved me from low voltage several times. Several things I like about the PI unit, other than the functionality, are: 1. If for some reason you need to bypass some function of the unit, the surge protection still functions in bypass mode., 2. The circuit boards in the unit are user replaceable. The only problem I ever had simply required a phone call, with an over night shipment of a new board to me. Five minute swap out.

To my limited knowledge of the other units available, if the unit fails any function it all fails, and the entire unit must be replaced.

Hi. New poster to this forum, but I have been reading it for quite a while. I have a Progressive Industries 30 Amp surge protector. I bought this after a friend had unfortunate incident with incorrect voltage at a campground. My unit hasn't been put to the test yet, but I feel that it is good insurance. My RV is plugged into an outlet beside my house, and it started detecting a low voltage. I checked and voltage was 120, so reported this to PI. I sent it to them and it was repaired under warranty - well after first year.
The unit comes with a small aluminum tab that can be used connecting to a security lock. The tab is flimsy and has a sharp edge that can damage the electrical cable. I removed this tab and replaced it with a marine threaded shackle. I used metal glue on the threads, then sawed off the flat part of the bolt, so the only way to remove the pin is by using a vice. When I plug in, I secure the surge protector with a padlock and bicycle cable. It may not be completely theft proof, but it will certainly make it difficult to steal.

Is the shackle just around the power cord of the surge protector? I'm about to hit the road for our first trip with a new PI 30 Amp Surge Protector and would like to improve the security factor.

Yes, the shackle fits over the cord. The size that I have will just fit past the cord. But once the "jaws"(where the pin screws into the shackle) are past the cord, there is enough room to insert a bicycle cable.
I have tried to attach a photo of my system (without bicycle cable lock), but I am not sure if it is working.
I suggest that you get a stainless steel shackle. This is a galvanized one which I had left over from my boating days.
