I agree with your post but at times I have a couple of sensors don't come on line until I get down the road a couple of miles.

My GUESSES on that would be a bit of corrosion on the battery, and the connection is being made after some stress from going down the road.
Or the tire valve stem is not quite depressed and the sensor isn't getting any information until a few jiggles happen.
I had problem #2 on mine, when a talked to TST about a faulty sending unit they suggested backing out/loosening the valve core a SMALL amount, to see if that would make a difference. I did, and it did, problem solved. Basically I changed the valve core from really tight to just snug. With the TST in place I didn't have to worry about the core working it's way out.

I've observed this occasionally and I think sometimes it is due to "shadowing" of the sensor depending on where it ended up on the wheel when the vehicles stopped rolling. Even with a repeated installed I think there can still be dead spots depending on the exact position of the sensors.

Good thought Doc, that one hadn't crossed my mind.

I have a newer 507 with the color display.
With the repeater, I have seen no sensor loss. I've run without the repeater, and it picks up the toad sensors some 50-60ft back and never had a sensor loss.
I have it configured for 10 sensors, I have run it with 6, when I got lazy and didn't put the sensor on the rear 4 tires of the MH. it simply doesn't display a value for the other 4. I would assume that's what it does if it looses signal.
Just don't tighten the sensors too tight!
I remove the sensors after each trip. What a terrible feeling when I take one off and the stem is stuck open. I've learned to have the Viair ready to go, just in case. Usually, if I hit it with the Viair the stem closes. I've gone through 4 valve stems by crushing the spring...I always carry at least 10 valve stems and two removal tools...call it paranoia.
I have mixed feelings about removing the anti-theft caps; it would make it way easier to remove the sensors post-trip, but if someone decided to take one it could leave me with a flat tire.
I like this thing, for the peace of mind when driving, but at the same time it gives me anxiety knowing that a valve stem might be ruined by using it.

The spinning cap thingy? I bought a TST 507 new around May or June this year and none of the cap sensors have that spinning cap anymore. I carry two spares in case on fails.
The batteries are supposed to last a year so I never remove them except from the toad when we're not towing it for a month or so. I'm not carrying any spare batteries; I'll buy them when the first one croaks and replace them all.

Have had the 507 sensors (10) for over 8 years, 2 different trucks, 2 different trailers. Have not needed a repeater ever, even with the 40' fiver I now tow. If I don't remember to turn the monitor on about 15 mins before leaving, it will take some time to wake up all the sensors. Battery life, about 2 years. Now using the color monitor, big improvement. Sometimes lose a sensor report, but always comes back, probably could use the repeater for those incidents. Pretty good system...guarantee you it will get your attention if it goes off.

I was recently towing my trailer and ran over something on I75 and instantly got a screaming alarm and tire read 0. I pulled over and my tire was torn apart.
Rarely do I loose signal to a tire but when i do it is blank on that tire only.
Very happy with my TST

Being electronics I guess it can be different from unit to unit. I have heard of 507 sensor experiences like yours, but also some that needed the repeater from the start. In my case they worked great without the repeater for a year or two. Then some of the sensors started to not wake up no matter how long I waited, even hours. Once I got the repeater as noted before, they went back to perfect every time.
