Anyone have any suggestions. I really don't know what to look for. I just know I should have one in the camper.

I had one in my Suncruiser and tried it a few times but gave it up. It was just too much data to listen too and if you are traveling you may have trouble understanding what they are trying to tell you.

I do have the nat'l weather feeds on my handheld FRS radios that I use for backing up or whatever. I'd try these first and see if you still want to listen to the weather feeds. Plus, if you are away from the RV, hiking or whatever, you can still access the weather data while you are gone.

You can go to this site

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/nwrrcvr.htm

for lots of information and lists of retailers.
Weather radio is now "all hazard" radio. Local agencies can broadcast non weather emergencies such as chemical spills, amber alerts, enviromental hazards, evacuations....
Everyone needs a weather radio in their home, work, and RV.

Flying J has First Alert NOAA radios for about $20.

I have one and it has all 7 weather freq (162.xxx) emergency setting for weather alerts
AM & FM reg music /news
uses 4 "AA" batt or a 6V pwr supply.
well worth the $$.

I have a set of Audiovox FRS walkie-talkies that has NOAA Weather Alert built-in. I didn't know they had this feature when I bought them but it has come in very handy on a couple of occasions when we got caught in some questionable weather camping on the outer banks of North Carolina.

Having the NOAA weather reports available from my FRS radios has been a real bonus.

We have a radio shack weather radio, runs on AC or battery. Has the SAME feature (specific area warning)that enables you to code for the specific county you are in. The 7 channel catagory can cover a huuuuuge area, several counties for instance. With SAME you can limit that area to the county you are in. No need having the alarm go off in the middle of the night only to find out the warning is for 2 counties over. We've been very happy we've had it on several occasions, the warnings do come early enough to give you time to secure outside stuff BEFORE the storms hit.... The codes for all the states and counties can be found on WWW.NOAA.GOV just follow the "weather radio"
links. You should recheck these codes yearly since they are always adding new towers to fill in areas of the state which either aren't covered or are covered by weaker signals...
Hope this helps.

I have a radio shack model as well.

I like it when it is plugged in, but gave up on batteries. Got tired of installing batteries daily. Use it only when we are parked for awhile.

Will probably go back to hand held scanner with weather alert.

We have the Midland model WR-30 and can program it to specific area as well. Works on 120 vac and 4 AA batteries for back up. It also has three L.E.D.s that show you of a warning, watch or statment that has been issued while you were area. It has worked very well and I recommend every one has something to warn them of weather if they are in a part of the country they are not familiar with weather patterns.

We have the Midland WR-100 which has all the features of the WR-30. It has worked very well for us. You just have to know what county you are in.

We have used the Radio Shack 7 Channel SAME WX Alert radios for years (own at least 4, 1-RV, 3-Home, see dayton-skywarn.org for why we ehave so many). The beauty of the RS unit is that you can program just the counties you want (or not) AND the program OFF messages you don't want (e.g. at home we turn off some Watches & Warnings).

The unit comes with a 110 V cord and compartment for 9V back up battery. In the RV I substituted a RS Battery Eliminator for the 9V battery and wired it into the RVs 12 system (or you can just plug into a cigarette lighter outlet). Never have to worry about dead 9V batteries.

My problem is that when I'm traveling, I'll be #!$&% if I know what county I'm in. Once traveling thru Texas I was holed up in a motel with major tornado warnings going on and I had NO idea what county I was in!! God help me in a MH.

(Would this be where maps come in? LOL!)
