one thing you might look at first is your speakers. I like the 1.5 din factory radios because the buttons are big and mostly single function. Can't wear my reading glasses while driving, and the microscopic buttons on a fancy aftermarket single din rcvr are just too hard for me to operate.
Had this problem in my wrangler, sound system performance, even with a satellite addon, was just awful. Someone on the jeepforum suggested polk audio speakers, said they had low distortion and very high sensitivity, they produce a lot of clean sound with very little power input. I put 4 of them in the wrangler, stock size exact replacements for the factory speakers, and that old chrysler stereo instantly sounds great, even in a noisy old open jeep!
