Just a few minutes ago, I downloaded and installed IE9. v9.0.8080.16413

It seems to be working well and I am evaluating it. Of course at this point I don't think that I'm going to cleanly restore IE8 in the event I don't like 9.

So far so good. Slight differences so far in appearance and operation but nothing major.

I have been using IE9 in one form or another since beta testing began. It is a great example of newer not necessarily being better. I have to keep Firefox and Chrome installed for problem web sites. Many sites have yet to comply with the IE9 rules, and the "compatibility" mode in IE9 doesn't always work with these sites.

A prime example is the FMCA site. Posts run off the screen to the right so much that you have to use the horizontal scroll bar to read them. The menus for the control panel don't work either. A banner ad at the top of some pages displays over some of the text. An alternate browser is the only way to view it.

I have stuck it out with Microsoft since day one, and except for maybe Win Me, this is the most disappointing product for me to date.

Doesn't sound like I need to abandon Firefox.

I use Firefox and have this problem on some sites. Any ideas why?

Thanks.

I'm currently using the latest Firefox updated today (v 3.6.15). I have used Firefox for 3-4 years wilh never a daily crash or several as I had with IE. So far, never a problem with anything. When V 4 comes out soon, I'll go there as well - so far I'm a lot happier with Firefox

Here is PC Magazines current review of the various browsers which might be interesting reading for those who would like an alternative to IE:

and a review of IE9

I'd been using the beta version too, until recently getting the full upgrade. During beta I had no problem with the FMCA site, but the escapees site was doins as described, running off the side of the page. Since downloading the full version that has gone away.

The only continuing issue I have is with Google Earth. I'm unable to view anything requiring Flash, and I have no idea why.

Exactly like it sounds.. a 'script' tells the browser how the webpage behaves.. just like a script tells an actor. Most common is JavaScript (its also the source of most trojans/spyware )

Jim, you can change the size of the items displayed on the screen by holding down the CTRL key and using the scroll thumb wheel on the mouse. One way, the screen is filled, the other way it is reduced.

Interesting - I have no problem with Google Earth on with the desk top. It's on the laptop but 'wont connect'. It crashed one day, and never came back even after removing and reinstalling. About the only difference between the two computers is that the lap top has XP Pro SP3 while the desk top due to my screw up has the XP Home Ultimate SP3 (or whatever it was called)
