I keep hearing phone ads on TV about 3G service. What does the term 3G mean?

3G generally refers to the 3rd generation of cellular service and can also be used interchangeably with EVDO or HSPA services from the cellular companies.
Do a Google search for just 3G and you will get more information than you could absorb.
