I just switched to the new Verizon 4G wireless USB modem VL600 replacing the old 727 3G. If I go into a non 4G area the modem switches to 3G

The 4G service is 10 X faster than our old 3G service was. I am glad Verizon alerted me about the switch earlier this week.

This is excellent news. Now if only Verizon would increase the data limit to 10 gigs.

Not a problem.
$50 = 5 GB
$80 = 10 GB

For years we never used more than 2 or 3 GB per month but a few things happened and that changed starting about three years ago.

3G showed up just about everywhere we go and we tend to download more because it's fast.
Software became even more bloated than in the past. It is not uncommon to see 30 to 100 MB updates. The Windows 7 updates seem to always be pretty large.
Facebook came along and the kids and grand kids post videos or post links to YouTube videos.

We have two laptops networked and both of us are pretty active on the internet.

We have a Blu-ray player and use NetFlix when the data rate is high enough (>700 kbps). A ~2-3 hour show (a typical movie) uses 1 GB or slightly less. We monitor our usage on the Verizon site and typically will watch 5-7 movies a month this way on our 10GB plan. Everything else we do pretty much fits in the remaining 2-3 GB. I'm not saying this is cheaper than driving to a Red Box, but the selection is better and there's not always a Red Box available when you're out in the woods!

I also switched to Verizon 4G two weeks ago. I got a LG VL600 4G modem and a Cradlepoint MBR1000 router and so far they have worked great with no hang ups. We keep two laptops and a WiFi printer connected 24/7 and we never go over the 5G limit. With my old 3G plan I paid $59.95 a month and the new 4G plan with my military discount is $42.50 a month. So I'm a happy camper - more speed and less cost.

I don't have a problem staying under 5GB myself, but my sweetie is a movie buff and iTunes' best customer so when she logs on to the router we have had $300+ bills. She now has her own Mifi(older 3G model) and I'm thinking of getting a 4G Mifi. which will be less expensive than the data card I'm now using. I've spoken to Verizon and was told I could keep the data card dormant on my account and switch back to it if I needed. I have an antenna and amplifier I can plug into the data card when I'm in a fringe area and don't want to lose that capability.

Are you using a 3G or 4G antenna amp?

I'm looking at this Wilson: 3G/4G Outdoor Weatherproof Directional Panel Antenna w/ cables for VL600 - improves 3G or 4G! [AT-301157-VL600] - $103.90 : 3Gstore.com

We also bought the revolution to use as a hot spot and it works well -- assuming you get 4G in your area.

What we are doing to keep under the usage limit is to play NetFlix directly on the phone so that it uses the unlimited phone data plan vs the broad band / tethering plan. We play the movies on our TV by way of a micro-to-regular HDMI connector on this phone.

An upside to this is that it will work on WiFi, 4G or 3G.

Downside is that the movies are slightly pixelated when you drop to 3G. But compared to getting satellite or paying hefty overage charges it's a nice setup.

Nothing is Free anymore...OK yes they gave me a $50 credit and $50 rebate which offset the modem cost, but it cost a new 2 year contract at $50 per month for 5GB. I can live with that.

I wonder why you can get unlimited data for smart phones for $29.95
