Ads & Spam

Ever wonder where some of this stuff comes from and why it is showing up on your computer?
I run a security program (Avast) that eliminates a lot of them and it also tells me who is trying to track what I am doing. The program prevents them from tracking me, it just tells me that they are trying to.
On this site there are usually 4 sites that track you. Facebook, Google GPT, Quantcast and Doubleclick.
I've ran into sites that have 7 to 8 different ones and some that have one or none. Those are few and far inbetween.

It's amazing how soon after you do a google search, write an email about a product that an ad will start appearing with that very product hi-lited. Visit a golf related website and sooner rather than later you will see an ad for golf equipment.

That's why I run Ghostery add-on for FireFox browser. Some websites will not display correctly if one of the trackers/cookies is not permitted, they are few, but once in a while I do need to allow that particular one in order to use that website.

Zoomify

Greetings Tom Wilds. I have a feeling you have malware on your machine. I looks like you might have Zoomify on it. It is included in some download sites. You must always use Custom Install, if you go the automatic it will install unwanted programs along with what you want. Two of the real bad sites are CNet and Download.com. Your virus protection will not see them because you told your computer to downloaded them.

We use Adblock Plus and it's been pretty effective!

Thanks for the note on Ghostery. It removed a lot of the annoying ads from this site. Makes it much nicer now.

Cheers
Scotty

Just want to let you know that programs will not work. The run file is loaded on your computer when you get a program from CNet or Download along with other file places. I have been in communications with the virus program people and they all said it will get thru all of them. It ends up on your computer even if you do not check the box. To make it really bad is it becomes a hidden system file and then deletes you restore points. The people at Malwarebytes got it out of my computer after three times and not with their program. If you start seeing adds in your browser you have it. Do not blame Google, they do not do that. If you have a highlighted ad then you have it.

I would recommend NEVER using "download sites." Go directly to the site of the software you want and download from there. (i.e., for Firefox, go to Mozilla.com.)
