I recently transitioned from a PC back to a Mac . . . relatively painless, except there's no Mac version of MS Streets & Trips. I know I could run Windows on my new Mac and then run Streets and Trips, but I want to avoid that.

Anyway, my search for a satisfactory replacement route planning software package for the Mac revealed that Garmin makes a free product called "RoadTrip." Wondering if anyone is using it . . . wondering what you think about it.

I've downloaded it and played around a little . . . but can't figure out how to get load detailed maps on it

Any thoughts? Thanks.

I have been using Garmin RoadTrip for over a year. Previous to that I was using Garmin MapSource for the PC on my Mac using Parallels (Windows emulator). I have found RoadTrip to be superior with a few exceptions. Both programs depend on your having a Garmin GPS which can connect to your map. I used a program from Garmin on the PC side called Garmin Map Converter to convert "City Navigator North America" and "MetroGuide USA" to be usable on the Mac side. I copied the converted files to the Mac side and used 'Import' on RoadTrip to install the maps. POI's can be independently downloaded and installed or can be transferred to and from your GPS device along with routes and favorite locations. One of the nice features of RoadTrip is the ability to use the way point tool to add GPS coodinates to your map and to your list of favorite locations.
The following programs are available on the Mac pages at Garmin.com for use with your Mac.
Garmin BaseCamp
Garmin MapInstall
Garmin MapManager
Garmin POI Loader
Garmin RoadTrip
Garmin WebUpdater

One drawback is that there is no map print function although you can use Mac screen capture to print them. Of course it will work without a GPS device attached but an attached device greatly increases its usefulness.
