But to answer the OP's question, for where we've been (mostly S, SW, and W) Verizon is the best we've found, and we've tried several.

I have a Virgin Mobile USB modem that is month to month with no contract. The first year I used it I liked it, but the past two years it is next to worthless. I have found that while it will connect, the throughput is a snails pace. Less than dialup. So I have abandoned it and I am using my iPhone as a hotspot with AT&T which is giving me good service, but with a higher cost.

It also depends on where you plan on using the service. Companies like T-Mobil and Metro Cell have very limited coverage areas. They are concentrated in metropolitan areas. Companies like Verizon and AT&T have very good coverage even in the boonies. You can go to the various companies web sites and check out their coverage maps.
We use a Verizon JetPack at home and take it on the road with us. So far I am happy with it. Our plan has 5Gig per month for $50.00 . We do have to be careful about downloading things like You-tube and videos. They eat up the gigs.

I agree with the virgin mifi...great when driving on interstates and connecting with towers/ but in the remote areas without towers it is useless...
