OK. I have a question for all ya'll techie types out there.

My wife and I are thinking about a new 5th wheel trailer. We are full-time and we have DirecTV with HD. I use a ground Slimline3 antenna.

I was considering an antenna on the roof. Couple of questions:

  1. The antenna they provide an option for is the Traveler 305 Auto Seek. Will this support all programming including all HD?
  2. I see a lot of rigs with auto seek antennae in the various campgrounds and some of them seem to take 30-45 minutes to seek and lock in on the satellites. Is this normal for auto seek? Heck, I can have my ground unit set up and be watching TV in 15 minutes.

Information appreciated.

Auto seek time is dependent on several factors; the clarity of the sky, obstructions like leaves, pine needles or a building. I have a Winegard and it takes about 10 - 15 minutes under normal (read good) conditions. Bad weather or a cloudy sky can make it take longer but NEVER more than 20 minutes.

But the true travelers are they who leave for leaving’s sake Saying continuously, without knowing why: ‘Let us go on’.
Paraphrased from Baudelaire’s ‘The Journey’

Just had a Traveler installed. The tech said the seek time is dependent on several things such as how long the unit has been without 120 power, how far you go between times of setup, etc.

Good thing about an automatic, I can have a beer while it is working and I never have to go out in the rain to set up a dish.

The TRAV'LER SK-3005 and the MotoSAT HD SL-5 will receive all DirecTV HD.

My MotoSAT usually took about 5 minutes, but even when it took longer, it was a lot easier than setting up my ground dish.

I believe the norm for both dishes is in the 5~10 minute range.
