Hey everyone. We're thinking of adding a backup camera system before our trip out west in a couple of months. We'll be towing the Jeep on a trailer, so it would be a good thing to know if something wasn't right back there! I don't know much about camera systems, but thought this one looked pretty good, for a reasonable price. Opinions?

You may want to look for one with up/down tilt feature, so you can check your hitch and your trailer. Standard on some from factory, don't know about aftermarket.

Thanks for your input Bill. It sounds like the tilt feature would be handy... I'll look for an affordable system that has that feature.

Most backup cameras can be adjusted to begin the view at your bumper and extend out far enough to see beyond your tow vehicle. This eliminates the need for any kind of tilt feature. I like the idea of a good IR camera if it actually works. We very rarely have to back up at night (don't need IR to see your tow car) but it would be nice to see something when we do!

I don't think the IR will come in all that handy in the summer, but here in Florida we are fortunate to be able to camp all year round. With the short daylight hours in the winter I can imagine that a night vision camera would come in handy when backing into a campsite after dark. I can see what I'm backing into!

Our rear camera is adjusted so the back of the toad is at about mid-screen. This allows us a good view of the toad, a fair view of what's coming up from behind at a distance as well as what is riding my tail. Very nice view IMHO.

Our motor home came with a B&W (Black & White) three way system. After using it some, I think I would prefer a color system. I have been taking B&W photographs for much of my life and was surprised, that even with that kind of familiarity with B&W, it took a couple extra moments for things to register in the B&W monitor. I use the monitor as a sort of rear view mirror and glance it often as we go down the road. I think I would be able to understand and read the situation behind me a bit quicker with a color monitor.

I bought a system from this dealer using eBay early last year and am very happy with it.

RVJeeper,

Make sure the monitor has a day and night mode. The day mode is bright and can easily be seen while the sun is out. Likewise, at night, you will not want to have the monitor bright, so night mode is softer and easier on the eyes.
