We have a Tomtom and Navigon on my iPhone. However, neither of these gives us low clearance and narrow roads warning. What have you found to be the best GPS program that stays up to date to keep you out of trouble? I've already learned that the proposed route may not be the best route for the RV and the toad.

I am curious as well----
After being led to some "of those roads" by reliance on GPS---I stocked in a Truckers Roads Atlas for trip planning and try to look ahead in places I am unfamiliar. The atlas has clearances, towing, weight restrictions etc; at a good price. This has worked for me quite well.

The best one that I have found is the Garmin 465t. It is made specifically for truckers and has height, weight, and commercial restrictions. It allows you to put in different size restrictions on your rig which is also very helpful. Rand McNally is coming out with an RV specific GPS next month. From what I've read it should be very helpful. For any GPS user though, always know at least generally where you are going before you leave. I will usually print out a turn by turn list off Microsoft Streets and Trips before I embark on any trip into unfamiliar territory. All GPS's make mistakes of one kind or another.

DeLorme "Street Atlas Plus" and an ad-on consisting of a very large set of data files prepeared by an independent company to integrate as desired into the DeLorme "Plus" software. It is called "RV Directions 2011".
Bridge clearance warnings can be chosen at one foot intervals from 9 to 14 feet. only those below your clearance choice will be displayed.
It is also loaded with other features to numerous to mention (how about an instant display on your map of all the Wal-Marts that allow RV parking, or Flying J's, truck stops, BLM, Army Chore of Engineers, national and state campgrounds and much more).
A cheap old large screen laptop with USB will work just fine.

Gary do you know if the add on works with MSN Streets and Trips? I have seen others mention add ons for S & T, but it sounds like what you are referring to would be much more complete.

Co-pilot gives truckers routes and low clearance with all kinds of options for roads.
MSN streets and trips with a push pin file "Streets2011_POI_MegaFile" that has a VERY extensive data base low clearance included.
These two are to be used with a PC, MSN can be purchased with a GPS puck and a GPS puck can be purchased for co-pilot.
Down side needs PC, up side very large screen. Cost in the $100-$120 range.
Several newer Garmin GPS have larger screens are truck routing beyond the 465T, cost in the $250-$450 range.

Yes, it will work with "Streets and Trips" according to the "Quick Starts" instructions.

We have the Garmin 465T and it works great. It has two modes. Car and Truck mode. I did change the vehicle picture to an RV. It will calculate different routes depending if it is in car or truck mode.

I use a magellan with a 7 in. screen. The large screen gives an old guy a better view. I always look at the map or atlas before I leave the campgroud and get a idea of where I am going. My wife keeps the atlas handy and reminds me when we are changing Interstates or road numbers. We have never had a problem usuing this combination.

I'm with you -- the bigger the screen, the better.
I have the Garmin 465T and unlike others I don't care for it. The screen is too small, the icons are too big, . . .
I'm leaning towards the Rand McNally TND710 ($450). It has lots of "trucker" stuff that I won't use, but it looks very capable.
Try this site for GPS comparisons:

One thing to remember with the Droid Iphone apps(i have and use one also 3 GPS and a computer puck system) they take the 1-3-4G to work IE: DATA. In the good old USA that is fine but venture into Canada and you may find a huge bill when you get home. So for going north until you get to Alaska a stand alone is the way to go be it GPS or computer GPS.
