We use a Garmin with life time updates. There have been no problems with it. The screen is big enough and easy to read both at night and during the day. Before every trip we plug the unit into the computer and it downloads the updates. I think theres a thread which talked about the Rand Mcnally.

I have read on these forums that many favor the Garmin Dezl 560 LMT. I am not yet convinced. That is why I am likewise interested what somemore people have to say.

Here is a site that is testing several of the trucking/rv gps's. They are very detailed on the testing, taking months and lots of miles to check them out. I know there are other gps's but these are the ones they are testing right now.

Truck driver GPS review comparison and rating features - Garmin, PC Miler, and Rand McNally TND

We use a laptop with Delorme Street Atlas software and their BT-40 hockey puck GPS that plugs into a USB port. We think it is much easier to plan a trip, add vias, stops, POIs and so forth. It will also do a search a specified number of miles ahead for gas stations, rest stops and other things.

We have a Garmin GPS that we mostly use in the car but it does sit on the motor home dash when we travel in the coach. I check it from time to time in case the navigator is playing solitaire and is not paying attention to her job.

Cheapest Garmin you can get. They update maps 4 times a year and they are cheap. All the rest are using maps that are two years old.

I've been using the Garmin 465T for a couple of years. It allows me to switch between car and truck mode. In truck mode I can enter my length, weight, and height. It will only take me on routes that I will fit with fifth wheel in tow. It has been a lifesaver! Highly recommend it!

We have used Tom Tom, Garmin, Rand McNally and Microsoft Streets and Trips for our laptop. All will do the job. Rand McNally for trucks was unique in that it works well for large motorhomes. But if we really want to plan a trip, import points of interest, truck stop locations, points of interest from state websites, then Microsoft Streets and Trips does it the easiest. It will also display on a larger laptop screen, so you can see more. It is easier to make it take you on a route that you want, and not something the computer wants to map out.

We usually use the Garmin for turn by turn directions, but my wife sits over there with the laptop on the dash for the really big picture. Even my son in law who drives a truck for living, and has literally tried them all, keeps going back to Microsoft Streets and Trips, because it is more accurate, finds more addresses, and gives better time and mileage estimates than others.

I have a Rand McNally RV GPS for our rig. We love it not only can you input your weight and height, but update it on the computer and it will let you know when you're entering a construction zone, approaching steep grades and changes in speed zones. It also has a campground registry, big rig friendly gas stops and rv service centers. It was a little pricey but well worth the money. I highly recommend it.

Has anyone looked at the 7" Magellan RV9145? It comes preloaded with Good Sam/trailer Life campground directories. Is it worth considering?

WRT to MS Street and Trips. Can you enter your vehicle dimensions? I've heard that with "RV" gps units they don't make you do U-turns, but rather route you around if you missed a turn. Does MS S&T do that? Does it alert you to overpass height or bridge weight? Does it route you around bridges that can't take the weight?
Did I miss anything? Please feel free to add it to the list. I really like the idea of useing the laptop with a puck for GPS but I think the above list includes some thing that would be pretty helpfull whilst driving a RV.
Thanks gang,
Stewart
