Best WiFi option?

OK here's the issue, tired of paying 2 different phone Co. - land line and Verizon. Where I live my only options for internet at S&B right now is land line DSL, satellite, or Verizon wireless. I'd like to do away with land line and DSL internet provider. If I went with a Verizon wireless mobile hot spot, which unit would provide the best value for my money when combined with my wireless phone plan? As to internet usage, we don't stream video movies, etc. maybe a short clip here and there off Facebook. Total time spent on the internet per day doing searches, browsing, various forums etc might be 2 hrs a day.

If you are going with Verizon for data (make SURE you have a good signal inside your house first) then take a serious look at Millenicom FIRST. They are a reseller of Verizon data, have a hotspot plan with 20 gig of data for $70. No tax, no fees - REALLY $70. And no contract. It is the same Verizon network. You have to buy the device from them, and the current device is a Jetpack Pantech 291L....it works very well - unlike previous mifi and Jetpacks. Millenicom.com

The only affordable wireless plan for anything above light usage is from Millenicom, and at 2 hrs./day (depending on your usage patterns) even that might not be nearly enough. I wouldn't like having to monitor my usage due to data caps so for any fixed location I'd almost always choose cable or DSL if available.

Bottom line, it doesn't matter how many providers you pay, just how much you get for your money.

X3 on Millenicom service and value. Even with 20gb I can reach or exceed. Especially easy to do if streaming videos.

I can do nearly 20 gig a day if it's raining and I'm streaming Netflix. Fortunately I have Verizon unlimited data plan. Doesn't seem to be any mobile options economical enough to stream video on a regular basis. $70 a month for 20 gig is a joke in my opinion. I pay $45 for unlimited fiber at my house, lol.

Verizon offers a very good deal on a "landline" system. Basically 20 bucks a month and unlimited calls in the USA. You get a box and use your old phone. I have had mine three months. Works very well.

Verizon also offers a bunch of data plans on a 4G hotspot. Or you can use your cell phone as a hot spot. Verizon wireless is not as fast as cable nor be anywhere close to their latency time. But for most use a Verizon data plan should work fine. Go to Verizon store or Best Buy to see the hardware.

I know you said you wanted rid of your S&B DSL but did you know you can cancel your land line & keep the DSL in most cases? I did that with Centurylink.

^^This. +

I understand there's some kind of loop thingy or something they can run dsl in without a phone. Should be able to get pretty fast broadband for about $50 a month. Do the cheap data plan on the cell for when you're away.

Am I missing something?

I used to have Verizon unlimited mobile broad ban for a set price, but when I upgrade my cell phone a little over a year ago, I had to get a new plan, and the unlimited internet was no longer available. I now have to pay per GB. If I put my self on a 10 GB plan, we used 11GB. If I upgraded to 14GB, we used 15GB. I was paying too much $$ for exceeding the plan. We now have Century Link for home use, and Verizon is now on a 2GB plan, just for Cell use, and the mobile broad ban is for RV use only, if the RV park has no WiFi.

^^This is the deal.

Verizon has the best coverage almost anywhere in the country.
When you can't get cell then you need a sat-phone.

We actually carry them on the bikes when riding remote areas, like baja, grand canyon north rim, Death Valley, etc. In these areas there is no cell coverage - only gps and satellite phone.

There's a new gizmo we carry called a SPOT locator. It pings a signal to a satellite and acts like a locator, you can track it with access to the user's account on the internet. The wives love these things. Also serves as a SOS or 911 emergency beacon. There's no internet data with it though, it's just a position locator.

I assume you realize by now that you didn't have to give up your unlimited plan just because you upgraded your phone. All you had to do was pay full price for the phone rather than the "subsidized" price.

I've got Verizon unlimited also, I use it for my whole house and at work. WiFi right off the phone works great, I will do just about anything not to lose it.
My cousin upgraded his Sons phone and lost his unlimited he is singing the blues now.

We use 30-40 GB/mo so the cost of service would be quite high if we had to pay by the GB. Furthermore, there are "creative" solutions to the upgrade issue that can keep the costs way below $750.
