Anyone have any experience getting a data plan in Canada, if you don't have a Canadian address? It appears that most of the providers have no-contract plans, but not sure about getting an account.

Thanks!

joe

If you are from the US and currently have service with one of the major providers you should be able to call and add Canada to your plan. It does cost extra but it is much less than getting charged for using a US phone in Canada without this plan.
Data plans are different and likely not an affordable option.

I have Verizon service through Millenicom for our cell modem. They do not offer an add-on for Canada. I don't think I can go directly to Verizon since my service is though a reseller.

Looking at some of the Canadian provider web sites, it looks like they offer no contract plans for similar prices to the US, and a modem is under $100. Just not sure if they would sell me one. :(

Will probably not bother this time, since we'll only be in Canada 7-10 days each way, and should still be able to get sat service when we're parked. Next summer we're going to Newfoundland, and will be out of the US for over a month when we probably won't be able to get satellite (unless we can switch to a different bird).

Are you using Hughes or iDirect for your satellite internet service? What satellite are you currently assigned to?

We have a Verizon stick and on our previous trip back home from Florida, a couple of weeks ago, I kept it active and when we got home to Canada I used it ONCE to check my email and retrieve two very small messages.

Just testing the waters if you know what I mean.

Our next bill from Verizon showed the Canadian usage as 74 kilobytes and just over $20.00 in USA funds for that tiny amount of data.

We have the 5 gig plan @ $60.00

We just got back from Florida again and this time I suspended our service until the fall and they asked me if I wanted to have normal service in Canada instead of suspending the account.

We did not need that as we have great service here at home already and we are only a few hours from the border but I will check to see what they want and let you know as soon as they respond.

The footprint for both 121 and 105 show good coverage in NS and NF but if I had my druthers, I would move to 105 as the satellite will be much higher in the sky and give you a better look angle. In theory though, either satellite should work.

Yeah, I probably will request a move, but not until next spring.
