Canadian cell phone svc

We and 3 other couples will be traveling to Alaska thru Canada and am beginning to think about cell phone svc. In '12, we just added Canada to our ATT phones and used them. But coverage wasn't that great. Any better ideas?
Normal routes from MT thru western Canada to Fairbanks and back. Will be in Canada better part of 2 months, so thinking about coverage for wifi with our hotspots. I realize a lot of places just don't have service at all.
Thanks for any help.
Joe

Telus is probably the best choice for Western Canada. If you own your own phone and it is unlocked, you can enter into a no contract plan and shut it down when you are done (no penalty. If you do not have an unlocked phone, Telus does sell cheap phones for their system for around 60 to 120 bucks. They even waive the account set up fees. just a thought

Things have changed dramatically since 2012. We traveled to Banff a few months ago and found the Canadian phone service to be great.

You may or may not be aware that all carriers are rapidly switching from GSM/CDMA to LTE. The old GSM/CDMA restrictions do not apply today as long as you have an LTE phone. If you do, you can basically select from a number of Canadian carriers. (Of course your US carrier my place some limitations, but I know Verizon allows you to select any carrier that shows on your phone. My default carrier was crap so Verizon tech service just told me to select another one until I was satisfied. I selected Bell and it was great.)

You mention going through western Montana which takes you through Alberta. My wife has T-Mobile and i had Verizon and we both used Bell while we were in Canada. My wife paid $10 a month for her Canada add-on and I paid $25 a month (billing month - not 30 day period). But, since both our phones were LTE we both used Bell in Canada and their service was great! (I'm not sure what AT&T wants to add for Canadian service.)

Enjoy your trip and don't miss Waterton National Park, and the Columbia IceField Hiway between Banff and Jasper. The glaciers are receeding quickly.

Telus clients while in the USA use the AT&T network. You should speak to AT&T, I'm sure they have a roaming plan deal with Telus. That would be less hassle than getting a phone from Telus. You can also monitor the amount of calls you make while in Canada to keep your cost inline with the budget. Have a great trip to the north country and enjoy the northern lights. Remember, certain times of year it is 24 hours daylight.
